The Story Of Adebimpe, A Symbol Of Change And Courage

in The Ink Welllast month (edited)

There lives in a small village called Awede a young woman called Adebimpe. It was during the rainy season in the village of Adebimpe, a very small community of people with the same mind and culture.

On that fateful evening, Adebimpe, a 27-year-old woman, was standing in the middle of the village square with her heartbeat beating faster than it usually used to be.

Generations to generations, the villagers who lived in Awede have always lived in the dear and oppression of a certain evil spirit called Ajedu. It has become the norm for more than 3-4 decades in that village whereby the evil spirit called Ajedu who was reported to constantly appeared to the villagers dreadfully.

It was reported also that Ajedu is an evil spirit that dwells in the Forbidden Spirit as every year, the villagers of Awede always offer sacrifices to appease and calm the anger of the evil spirit down. Sacrifices in different forms like Yams, chickens, Goats and even sometimes a whole human being.

On this fateful year, the chief of the village have made their decision. They will be sacrificing a human life to appease the Evil Spirit and the person chosen is Adebimpe.

Chief Osun, who is always in charge of announcing the preparation every year, did it at the village square as he mentioned the name. "Adebimpe" He announced.

"The Village has decided to choose you this year to save the village from the yearly anger Ajedu always shows towards the village. You sacrificing your life will bring us peace for this year". Chief Osun announced in the gathering of the villagers at the market square.

Without hesitation, Adebimpe responded. "I will not back down!!!" She said with so much boldness.

"What do you mean you will not back down, you want to reject our tradition?" Chief Osun responded.

"Yes!!!" Adebimpe responded. "The last time I checked, our forefathers taught us to always be courageous and not be afraid. My fellow Villagers, we cannot continue to live in the fear of this so-called evil spirit," Adebimpe voiced her opinion.

Her words spread through the hearts of other villagers, and for a very long time, the villagers begin to feel this deep sense of hope and positivity. But of course, the chief present in the gathering rejected her opinion and insisted that she would be used for sacrifice this year.

That fateful night, Adebimpe silently packed all his necessary tools, like food and knife and began to journey into the forbidden forest. Her mind is made up. She wants to put a stop to all of this and face Ajedu the evil spirit face to face. Everything must end.

Just as what was Expected with Forbidden Forest, it was filled with lots of dreadful sounds ranging from animals, wild ones to be precise and also voices of unseen creatures. Even though Adebimpe seems to be afraid of the voice, she keeps moving because her mind is made up. A few hours into the forbidden forest, she heard a voice behind her.

Looking back, she saw a figure standing right before her. Half-human and half-human creature. There in her front standing the great Ajedu Spirit.

"What audacity do you have, woman, to come to my kingdom" The spirit ranges with a dreading voice.

"For years, you have held my fellow villagers captive of fear. Today, I have come to challenge you. If you are powerful, as they always say, fight me and don't always fight the weak". Adebimpe voiced out.

Ajedu laughed. "I can see, little kid, that you are courageous. But having boldness is not enough to defeat me"

"I have made up my mind that I will fight you even if it requires me to fight till I die"

Before coming, Adebimpe strategized on how to defeat the spirit so that she would pierce the knife to its heart. She heard that from her grandmother, who told her many years ago that Ajedu, the evil spirit, can only be defeated when its heart is struck.

With so much determination, she struck its heart with the knife she was holding directly into the creature's chest.

Ajedu roared in pain as the knife was still on his chest before finally dissolving like smoke.

Adebimpe returned back home to inform the people. "Ajedu the Evil Spirit is no more. We are now free". She announced to the villagers.

From that day till now, The village has been living in peace, and Adebimpe become a symbol of strength, courage and change to the people and for generations to come. She became a legend in the history of the village.
