Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #101

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Highlighting @zerah, with the story:

Until It Is Hatched

I felt the office shrink. My mind raced, I can't explain how I felt, but I knew that if I had stood up immediately at that moment, I might have collapsed. So I sat tight on my chair and shut my eyes, taking deep breaths.

Curator's comment :

Zerah writes an excellent piece for the CNF prompt. The story is well told with multiple creative elements that elevate it out of the ordinary!

Highlighting @blaqbarbie, with the story:

Spent before earned

She started talking with our teacher. My heart pounded so fast I thought it would burst. I started sweating. My hands were shaking as I pretended to be fully concentrated, copying my notes and avoiding eye contact with her.

Curator's comment :

A nicely constructed piece; balanced with good dialogue and use of show don't tell. BB took the time to edit this piece and it shows as a quality piece of writing.

Highlighting @jennyzee1, with the story:

Counting the wrong chickens

I shrugged my shoulders and ate the last bit of the burger I had in my hands. My mom had always been that way. She believed that a steady grinding with no leisure would get you to a maximum point in life.

Curator's comment :

jennyzee1 writes a most effective piece about counting chickens before they hatch. She creates a story in which tension builds and the reader becomes invested in the outcome. Even as readers can see the inevitable end--a result of her careless behavior--hope remains that she will avoid an unpleasant outcome. Jennyzee is in control of the story throughout. She guides the reader along. The story is good in so many ways, including dialogue, character development and arc. This is a fine piece.

Featured

Highlighting @nancybriti1, with the story:

Waiting for Godot

"This book was sent to Nancy by her Uncle from Caracas. It is a book that could not be found in any of the bookstores here and we had to order it elsewhere. Thank goodness, because thanks to the book, Nancy got English,” said Mom, always very proud, not of me, but of the book.

Curator's comment :

nancybriti1 writes the kind of nostalgic piece that brings us all back to a moment in childhood when parents made decisions and we were caught up in circumstance. The author's attention to detail evokes excited anticipation, and, more subtly, the author's resentment at the impending event.
