Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #108

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Highlighting @lightpen, with the story:

A friend with hidden secrets

"Good evening, Ma. Please, I am still having problems accessing the money sent to me. The bank network is bad. I wish to buy a few things and pay for them in addition to the previous bill as soon as the bank server improves."

Curator's comment :

lightpen writes an engaging, well structured CNF about discovering that his best friend and roommate was lying to him about his financial circumstances and taking advantage of his sweet, generous nature. The revelation of the betrayal is quite breathtaking and L narrates it all with perfect attention to pacing.

Highlighting @zerah, with the story:

Not As Innocent As You Think

But then again, there was cute Kunle, my colleague stealing glances at me at intervals from the other side of his cubicle. I guess he thought I couldn't see his eyes on me. And I made sure not to give a clue that I could notice him staring. I was enjoying it, every bit of it.

Curator's comment :

zerah writes a very well-written and compelling CNF about an office crush gone wrong. She senses the eyes and attention of an attractive young man on her, and enjoys the attention. A friend tries to discourage the attraction, telling her that the guy is a player. But she has already fallen under his spell. When he invites her out for dinner that evening, she readily accepts. But then, when she takes a few minutes to spiff up her makeup at the end of the day in a bathroom stall, she hears an argument in another stall between the guy and a woman (a superior) he is having an affair with, and the woman is explaining to him that he belongs to her and that he had better not date Z or any of the other young women in the office. She comes to her senses and calls it off! Nicely told, with excellent integration of action and dialogue.
