Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Highlighting @nancybriti1, with the story:

Recipes for crying

I did not have time to mourn my grandmother well, to get used to her death, to accept her absence, because in the month of her death, high school classes began and I had to prepare myself for the academic challenge that was about to begin. Also, because overnight, due to my grandmother's death and by my mother's orders, my sisters and I had to assume responsibilities in the house. All the things my grandmother had done all her life, in her absence, would be done by us.

Curator's comment :

With exceptionally vivid poignancy, nancybriti1, illustrates the desperate circumstance that followed the death of her grandmother. It's not the first time that N has shared just how much her grandmother's death affected their family, but it's the first time she demos the raw pain with so much heartbreaking precision.

Highlighting @popurri, with the story:

The water costume

Water is an element that is in motion, and although it is colorless, in the seas it looks blue and is the color that represents it. With these two characteristics, I set out to make the costume.

Curator's comment :

popurri writes a lovely creative nonfiction story about the time she made a "water costume" for her six year-old daughter to wear to school for carnival. The class was studying a nature theme, and each child was to dress in a particular costume for the event. Popurri agreed to dress her daughter as "water" which was a creative challenge. But she came up with a way to do it. Unfortunately, on the day of carnival, the costume came apart in the heat and with other children stepping on the colorful flowing strips that represented water. So her daughter was quite upset when she arrived to pick her up. But ultimately they had a laugh about it all when she told her dad and brother about it back home.
