Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #124

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last month's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Don't rule them off

On the day of the competition, I had already bought what I promised them that I would get for them if they made me proud. When they got to the stage, they shocked everybody, including me. I know they were intelligent, but not to the length they went. I was literally shedding tears of joy.

Curator's comment :

@coolbabe88 dares to doubt the classifications and impressions of school teachers about two children who are treated as not very bright. The main character, a devoted teacher, lets her intuition take over and chooses the children as the classroom representatives in school competitions. After hard training, the children become the best in the school for the pride of the voice narrating in the first person.

Highlighting @nancybriti1, with the story:

False idols

In a Biennial of Venezuelan literature, organized by my university, they invited one of the most popular authors of that time (I will reserve the name of that writer), who would be honored for her successful career. When I learned that this author would be invited, I was so excited that I not only signed up for the workshop she was going to give, which at that time cost me a small fortune, but I also offered to give her a tour of the city and to keep her company at some events.

Curator's comment :

A wonderful creative nonfiction story from nancybriti1 describing how much she admired accomplished writers and got to meet many of them during her literary studies in school. She offered to help host a particular writer, and was very excited about it, but upon arrival and throughout her stay, the writer proved to be a snob and a prima donna who had complete disregard for those who attended her workshop or tried to have a conversation with her. If you have ever had someone you idolized fall from the pedestal you placed them on, you can relate to this story.

Highlighting @popurri, with the story:

The path of musical notes

Sitting in front of the gleaming piano, his long, slender fingers on the keyboard, he marked the white notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, which jumped and ran over the lines of the score in front of him, fast as in an endless race.

Curator's comment :

Popurri crafts this fiction into a delicate symphony in which each note resonates and builds to a crescendo. There is drama, tension, pain and euphoria and with each emotion the tones of Rachmaninov echo in the reader's head until the finale, which literally takes one’s breath.

This Week's Prompt 124

A match made in heaven.

With Valentine's Day fast approaching, the idiom "A match made in heaven" seems appropriate. The meaning is simple: an actual or potentially perfect union. There's ample scope to write something sweet, dramatic, or life-changing that fits with this prompt; just remember to draw inspiration from your personal life story.

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
