Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #125

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last month's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Highlighting @nancybriti1, with the story:

In another life

"You are the only one who doesn't want to accept that I came to this world to love you" - he assured me that first time he began to talk to me with his eyes.

Curator's comment :

Nancybriti1 writes a gripping, totally mesmerising CNF about her first love. There is so much longing radiating throughout that it rips reality apart and pulls you into the situation screaming, "oh NO, don't let it go", but she did; she let the man of her dreams go! Something she regrets, but would, probably, do again if she had her time over. It's a story that resonates with everyone who has loved and lost at the slight of their own hand.

Highlighting @nathalie-s, with the story:

A match made in heaven

If people ask how I met my husband, I tell them the truth.

Oh, he was a one-night stand that never left.

And thank God for that. Because I was terrified of losing my best friend.

Instead, I married him.

Best call I ever made.

Curator's comment :

nathalie-s' perfectly paced, lyrical story about how she met and married her husband is injected with subtle, wry humour and grin-worthy engaging antidotes. A refreshingly well written glimpse of her life, which is exactly what creative nonfiction is meant to be.

Highlighting @zerah, with the story:

Longing

The ladle went against the pot matching the loud rhythm of the Lagos buzz and car horns I could hear from her kitchen window. On a closer look from her kitchen window, I could see the Lagos yellow buses zooming about on the ever-busy Lagos road, which was just a stone's throw from our apartment.

Curator's comment :

This is a lovely story, well written, full of affection and wisdom.

Highlighting @zain-ab001, with the story:

A Match Made In Laughter

I read it twice, then thrice. It wasn't a love letter but it was something more precious that I would never forget. I never saw him again but I would never forget him either.

Curator's comment :

zain-ab001 writes a wonderful CNF about a childhood friend who appeared at his school one year and was seated right next to Zain. A very powerful friendship grew between them, and there was really something unique about the boy. He had an infectious way of making people laugh. And in one vignette he stood up to bullies. Then, just like his arrival, his departure was sudden and unexpected too. He wrote a sweet goodbye letter. Zain has never forgotten him. This is a terrific read.
