Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction contest!
In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.
Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...
We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.
Important notes:
- Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
- We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
- Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
- Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
- We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
- Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.
Last Week's Creative Nonfiction Winners
Thank you to all who participated in last week's prompt Guilt

Honorable Mentions of the Week
![]() | A Strong Choice
That left me in a dizzying limbo of confusion, as I didn't know at the time if my father's advice was the right one to follow through with. Maybe I didn't explain myself well and that's why he only granted me that bland conclusion, or maybe he was right and I should just keep quiet and not say the erratic things my co-worker was doing. |
![]() | Pleading Guilty
A month later he was at it again. The light was green and then yellow. This time he was on his way to work on a rainy afternoon. The vehicle coming from the other side was going through the intersection at the same time. Because of the rain she couldn't stop and she collided righted into his new car. |
![]() | The weight of guilt
Youth was a time when my friends and I thought we were invincible, the masters of the world. We felt we were above many and that superiority made us look conceited, unfriendly and hateful. Very few people could stand us, and the antipathy we aroused, rather than worrying us, fed our ego. |
![]() | A week from hell
A week from hell|We got out of that death area with the help of other colleagues who pulled us to the burned zone with their rakes. There I fell to the completely black and lifeless ground, laughing at how close I was to death, while Adam cried for having narrowly escaped. I didn't stay there waiting to think about how close I had been to dying; I went in search of Lugo and the others who had moved to the safe zone but could still be in danger by not being in a secure area.. |
![]() | I KNEW I WAS GUILTY
When it got to a stage where about 8 dozen breakable plates were reduced to like 2 dozen, she knew she had to devise other means to make me reduce the way I break the plates, it's not like she brings everything out at once. She only replaces them two at a time whenever I break them. She knew she can't tell me to stop washing as I am the only one amongst my siblings who is old enough to do house chores and another reason is that I will use that as an avenue to stop washing plates. When she noticed I was keen on breaking them, she gave me a final warning that the next plate I will break she will use it to draw on my face the type of tribal mark I always see on my aunt's and uncle's faces. |
Third Place: Wins 2 Hive
Our third place winner is @alexlight, with the story:
A Tale Of Guilt And Growth
I woke up to the familiar sounds of Lagos—the cacophony of car horns, the distant chatter of street vendors, and the rhythmic beat of drums from a nearby celebration. The air was heavy with the scent of fried plantains and jollof rice, mingling with the earthy aroma of the red soil that seemed to coat every inch of this bustling city. Nigeria, my home, a vibrant tapestry of colors, sounds, and contradictions.
Second Place: Wins 3 Hive
Our second place winner is @vivaebony, with the story:
The Burden of Guilt
My heart pierced in regret, and my mind shattered into pieces. From the bottom of my heart, I didn't intend for things to turn out that way. I was naive, and I felt getting her father involved was only going to attract cautionary responses, I never intended to shatter her heart.
First Place: Wins 5 Hive
Our first place winner is @kemmyb, with the story:
A Tale Of My Secret Pages
She placed her finger on her lips, gesturing to me to lower my voice still. I glanced around, no one was paying attention. I sat down beside her and she introduced me to Mills & Boons. She partly removed the newspaper and I was captivated by the cover illustration of a man holding a woman, their lips almost touching in a lovely background. It was a historical romance.
This Week's Prompt #36:
Storm
The word storm has many meanings. You could take the word literally or figuratively, which means that this week's prompt is open to wide creative possibilities.
This week we ask you to write a creative personal story that reads like fiction using words related to a storm.
For this topic, there are several possible approaches. For example:
- Tell us how notice of an impending storm made you act rashly or in an uncharacteristic manner because of your fear.
- Maybe you discovered that a parent's or friend's disagreeable attitude toward you was merely a storm in a teacup.
- Perhaps you did something that caused a tempestuous emotional storm to rage through the heart of an associate, friend, or family member.
- If you survived a dreadful storm, offer a creative narrative about your actions that altered the outcome for others involved in the scenario.
Tell us about it!
Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
