Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #41
SourceWelcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction contest!
In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.
Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...
We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.
Important notes:
- Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
- We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
- Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
- Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
- We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
- Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.
Last Week's Creative Nonfiction Winners
Thank you to all who participated in last week's prompt Curiosity

Honorable Mentions of the Week
@nancybriti1 | Conversations on a bus
The bus was empty so we could sit wherever we wanted. The lovers sat in the back, perhaps to give each other the last caresses. The old man sat near the driver and the girl and I sat in the same row of seats, she behind me. The ride from downtown to my house was long, so I settled into the seat and looked out the window: the desolate, littered space resembled the end of a party. |
@lightpen | Damaging result of my curiosity
A few months after the encounter with my Aunt about the function of oil being applied on sewing machines, my father bought a cassette tape player. The player was very expensive. I could remember a mini party being organized to celebrate the purchase of the tape player. People came around to eat, drink and dance to the music that was played by the tape player. It was a lot of fun. |
@wongi | The Family Treasure
My cat moved into an alert position as her ears stood straight up. This signified that someone had gone out the door and the only person who could have gone out that door was my brother. My parents were fast asleep and my sister was occupied with her toys. This was my golden chance. |
@marynn | The Curious Adventure
Curiosity has always been a double-edged sword in my life, leading me to both wondrous discoveries and perilous situations. Ever since my childhood, I've been known to be an inquisitive one, and that trait has been part of my life. I love exploring the unknown, unfazed by the dangers that may lie ahead. |
Extra special mention for an author that has improved their writing by leaps and bounds @sadfish. Well done!
Third Place: Wins 2 Hive
Our third place winner is @rukkie, with the story:
A Curious Mind
This superstitious belief is common amongst the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria. There are lots of things we are told not to do because IT'S NOT GOOD. I am curious to know why as I have lots of questions I am yet to get answers to. For example, I am curious as to why are we told not to eat with our left hand, not to keep things with our left hand (though the answer given to this was that we will forget where we kept the thing), not to talk or sing in the restroom, not to wash clothes at night, not to look in the mirror at night and so on.
Second Place: Wins 3 Hive
Our second place winner is @rammargarita, with the story:
Graduation Surprise
A few months later, my graduation ceremony took place. I was dressed in the dress that my mother made for me, which highlighted my figure and my beauty. And she was very well-dressed in the dress that I made for her.
First Place: Wins 5 Hive
Our first place winner is @jhymi, with the story:
Curiosity Didn't Kill The Cat
I didn’t even hesitate, promptly abandoning my bathroom venture and choosing to follow her instead. I smiled to myself, thinking Sherlock Holmes would be so proud if he saw me right now. At the back of my head was the lingering thought that kept resounding, “Curiosity, killed the cat.” But for the sake of my discovery, I was quite willing to let it kill me. So, I followed her. She entered a room that hardly anyone ever visited and when I was sure that she was there. I turned back and left. I knew where she was now so another time would be to discover what she did there.
This Week's Prompt #41:
Intuition
Sometimes a deep-seated feeling gives you a forewarning of things to come. It might not be logical or actionable, but it's there. In other instances, you might've felt drawn to something or someone purely by instinct. Intuition has a strange, mystical aura.
This week we ask you to write a creative personal story that reads like fiction using words related to 'intuition'.
For this topic, there are several possible approaches. For example:
- Reflect on an incident where your infallible intuition served as a warning against impending disaster.
- Perhaps you discovered a soulmate because your intuition led you to believe that their heart was pure.
- Maybe intuition eased your path amid difficult family disagreements.
- Discuss an opportunity that you discovered based on your sixth sense.
Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!
Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
Contest Rules
- You have 6 days to write your story from the date of this prompt post. Be sure to check the deadline countdown.
- Write a real-life story with the creative elements of fiction, like characters, dialogue, scene setting and a story conflict.
- Post your story in The Ink Well Community.
- Please use the tags #creativenonfiction and #inkwellprompt on these posts. Other possible tags: #writing #inkwellprompt #nonfiction
- Stories must be written in English. If you've translated the post, it's best to add the original version below the translation. Do not write mixed language paragraphs.
