Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #43
SourceWelcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction contest!
In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.
Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...
We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.
Important notes:
- Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
- We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
- Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
- Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
- We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
- Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Honorable Mentions of the Week
@ibbtammy | Unrequited Love
I got dressed in my khaki pants and a black top, just when I was looking for my sweater as I needed to be properly covered because of the air conditioners in the cinema, in the process of looking for it, I heard a knock on my door, my sister walked in and she was smiling, the kind of smile she usually wears whenever she’s about to ask me for money or borrow my stuff, before she could utter a word I beat her to her game. |
@joycealarapon | House hunting walk-a-thon
We were both newly appointed interns with the goal of getting a house for six months only. Most importantly, two bedroom flats - my friend in one room and my sweet self in the other room, with close distance to the workplace, running water, and good power supply. |
@jhymi | Little Objects
And so, I devised a means. I had to have an object with me. A bag, a book, anything at all. When I walked, I’d adjust my bag on my shoulders, I’d run my fingers through the pages of my book, I’d twirl the pen in my hands and everything would be alright. No stumble. No stutter. Easy smile. Easy life. |
@stuartcturnbull | Where's My Wallet?
One morning I was hustling round the house on the way to work meetings and to visit Liz at the hospital. I couldn't find my wallet. My laptop was in my bag, I had my keys, various documents for work were accounted for. My wallet? Gone. It wasn't by my bed, or in my coat, or the car, or anywhere. |
Third Place: Wins 2 Hive
Our third place winner is @inessita, with the story:
A Mysterious Object
I opened the gift, it was the skateboard that I had asked for. In the letter that I had written to Baby Jesus, I immediately said, "Grandma, this gift, Baby Jesus didn't bring it to me, it was Aunt Yuli, who brought it".
Second Place: Wins 3 Hive
Our second place winner is @kemmyb, with the story:
Water Globe Memories
I sat on one of the armchairs in our sitting room, pulled my legs to my chest and curled my hands around my knees. I wished the ground would open up so I could hide until my parents stopped talking. My siblings had vanished to their rooms.
First Place: Wins 5 Hive
Our first place winner is @riverflows, with the story:
On Remembering The Desert
Source Own
Later, we step out together, eat tagine and chargrilled brochettes in the smoking marketplace, and joke with the sellers whose comedy both entertains and sells. It does not take long to slip into a kind of pigeon banter - a sprinkling of French peppering our English with an Arabic greeting connects us quickly to the people who appreciate our attempts. Later we will be in a transport hub waiting for our bus to leave to take us over the Atlas mountains, and we watch their physical humour - the tap of a friend on the opposite shoulder, tripping people up and catching them make them laugh. We laugh with them. Later I'll trick our guide, Iache, by pretending there is something on his shirt, and when he looks down, I tap his nose. He finds it hilarious, and later, after we have gone to bed, we hear the desert men laughing hilariously. The next day, I see them tap chests and noses with guffaws of laughter.
This Week's Prompt #43:
Feast
Let's delve into the rich, vivid images that the word 'feast' imparts. Write a creative personal story that reads like fiction using words related to 'feast'.
For this topic, there are several possible approaches. For example:
- Reflect on a celebration where the excessive feasting left you with a nasty aftertaste.
- Pursue your feelings and emotions when you realized that a potential friend was feasting their ‘eyes’ far more covetously on your belongings than your scintillating person.
- Perhaps a feast marked a new chapter in your journey through life, and things were never quite the same for you thereafter.
- Maybe you met someone while celebrating a feast who changed your perspective on life and impressed you with their outlook and knowledge. Perhaps you formed a lasting relationship with this interesting person.
Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!
Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
