Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #47

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction contest!
In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.
Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...
We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.
Important notes:
- Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
- We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
- Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
- Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
- We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
- Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.
Last Week's Creative Nonfiction Winners
Thank you to all who participated in last week's prompt Mystery
Last week's participants
Honorable Mentions of the Week
![]() | Mystery
I was livid at first, then I began having these childish thoughts that my dad didn't really love me as much as he loved my other siblings or that he just didn't want me to finish up when my friends were finishing. |
![]() | My grandfather's wife
Although I was about 7 or 8 years old, it was no secret that my grandfather had a wife, whom we called aunt: our aunt Guillermina. Strangely, my grandmother did not get along badly with her. On the contrary, when my aunt Guillermina came home with my grandfather, my grandmother and she spent a lot of time together. I never saw her angry with her or treat her with displeasure. Likewise, my grandfather's wife treated my grandmother with great respect and even obedience. |
![]() | Losing my grandpa
After a while, I became sleepy, but I didn't feel like leaving him yet. I couldn't understand the feeling, but I knew I felt strange. Unknown to me, I slept off, and I was taken to my room. Just as on a normal night, I slept, and later in the early morning, I was woken up by strange voices and the loud sound of cries. Immediately, I hurried out of bed just to see what was happening outside, and I saw my grandma sitting on the floor, wailing and crying profusely. |
![]() | An unsolved mystery
"It's just a seam ripper, Amie; just get another one." She encouraged me to let go of it, and so I did partially. A part of me still wanted to know how it left its spot and was nowhere to be found, so I kept hoping that one day I'd eventually solve this mystery. |
Third Place: Wins 2 Hive
Our third place winner is @rukkie, with the story:
Searching For Answers To My Mysterious Questions
My mom thanked everyone and we both went home. The next day, she sat me down and explained to me that some things in life cannot be explained and she doesn't have the answers to everything. She further warned me of the dangers of going out at night and all that.
Second Place: Wins 3 Hive
Our second place winner is @rammargarita, with the story:
The mystery of the lagoon
"For as long as I can remember, when I was very small, my great-great-grandfather used to tell me. That that immense snake is in that lagoon. Its head rests at the beginning of the lagoon, and the other end of the snake is at the end of the lagoon. Yes, this snake is trying to get out, or move sharply out of this lagoon. The day that happens, the State of Sucre will be gone forever."
First Place: Wins 5 Hive
Our first place winner is @popurri, with the story:
The girl in the hospital
I saw a person enter the room through the door that led to the hallway, they were metal doors with the paint a little corroded, She was very young to be a nurse and did not have the uniform. Maybe she is a relative of a patient...I thought. She approached me.
This Week's Prompt #47:
Needle
The word "needle" has many connotations:
- Have you ever felt that finding your purpose in life was akin to searching for a needle in a haystack?
- The eye of a needle could symbolize the center of a storm. Have you ever experienced a tumultuous situation, either literally or figuratively, and found solace in the midst of it?
- Perhaps someone in your life, be it a friend or foe, took the "needle" to you without apparent reason. Can you recall such an experience?
- Did a fear of needles ever prevent you from seeking treatment for a health issue? Share your thoughts and feelings on how this fear impacted you.
- For those who have a passion for needlework, the needle holds a unique power. Have you ever felt the liberating and creative influence of the needle in your own endeavors?
Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!
Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
