Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #50

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction contest!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Honorable Mentions of the Week

@wongi
Mall Day Out

I like chocolates a lot and one could easily influence me with it. Unluckily for me, my friend was also a chocolate addict . Like clockwork I found myself picking chocolate bars and wafers off the counters. Without thinking twice.

@iskawrites
No more living for Janice

But I walked back to the mirror and looked. Indeed behind the charade, the real Treasure was crying desperately for expression. It was then I knew I had always been under the influence of Janice. I came to terms with the fact that Treasure had been tucked away nicely by Janice. She had replicated herself in me subconsciously.

@mmykel
How do I get over this influence?

Just as I lean my ears closer to listen to Deebo, one of the boys, as he starts explaining why he just can't let go of Clara, despite being mocked by fellow young men for being a simp, Koko walks towards me with a satisfying and somewhat mischievous grin. He whispers to my ears, "You guys can go back to the kitchen; I've spoken with mom."

@seunruth
Seventy-nine

Sometimes I think about it. I ask myself, who influenced who? But you see that's the thing about Influence in friendship. Sometimes you can't pinpoint who started it. You can't identify who thought of doing it first. So we all take the blame. We influenced each other.

Third Place: Wins 2 Hive

Our third place winner is @rukkie, with the story:

The Power Of Influence

Source

At night, I couldn't sleep as her face kept popping up and that moment she packed her wares with a pained expression on her face kept haunting me. I told myself I must find a way to buy from her to make up for what I did.

Second Place: Wins 3 Hive

Our second place winner is @smc.arike.oba, with the story:

SOON TO BE FIXED

Source: Own images

I remember resuming at Rose with hope and energy. I needed to be at the top of my game and show them that they wouldn’t want to lose me as a potential staff member. I was overwhelmed on the first day. Most things that were taught just a little bit in school were things I began to see on scan. Ultrasound was new and exciting, and it was indeed intriguing to actually see all the organs, blood vessels, and muscles we struggled so hard to learn in school.

First Place: Wins 5 Hive

Our first place winner is @agmoore, with the story:

Creative Nonfiction Prompt 49

"The short vowel is weak, and needs protection from the 'ing' monster, so it doubles the consonant. The long vowel is strong and can defend itself against the monster 'ing'."

To this day I remember the 'monster' lesson. Mrs. Birdsall used logic to reach her students. She taught me phonics. It was the first time anyone explained to me that words could be logical. Logic works really well with me. It's my language. It's the reason I would fall in love with geometry one day. It's the reason I excelled at sentence diagramming in middle school.

This Week's Prompt #50:

Heart

The word heart can take many forms:

Heartfelt, heartwarming, heartsore, heavy-hearted, heartthrob, heartache, heartless, heartening, heartily, heartstrings, heartburn, and so forth.

A few more ideas:

  • Perhaps you were faced with giving a friend advice about a situation or lifestyle choice, and you didn't have the heart to shatter their dreams by telling them the truth.
  • Maybe you were drawn out of your shell by a friend who was always the heart and soul of a party.
  • Share a story in which a heart-of-heart chat revealed that someone had a heart of stone or a heart of gold.
  • You realized that the stories that your grandmother/father told you were the "heart" of the galaxy you called home.

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.

Wow! Thank you so much @theinkwell . I am very honored to be among the winners.

Congratulations to other winners.

Oh my heavens. I'm really, really honored to have this recognition. I write for the pleasure of writing and sharing. It's a great privilege to be able to write in such a community. Thank you team. I wasn't looking for recognition or a prize. Writing for you and everyone else in the community is my prize.♥️

Yes, we know you have no desire for accolades or prizes, @agmoore. Sorry about that. 😇

We do love your writing, and you are an inspiration. One way to look at it is this: fledgling writers benefit from seeing what goes into a great story, which means it's important to make sure those stories shine bright and get a bit of a spotlight on them. Thank you for sharing your occasional story in The Ink Well.

🌼♥️🌼
