Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #57

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction contest!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last week's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Honorable Mentions of the Week

@george-dee
It's Okay To Dream Again

My mom was aware of my obsession with aeroplanes and she never worried about my choice of profession whenever I sang to her ears about becoming a pilot. As I grew, I became very eager about this huge dream and spoke about it among my friends and it earned me the nickname, Captain Tom. Whenever I looked at myself in the mirror, I always saw a tall professional pilot.

@rare-gem
Shattered dream

She sighed with tears rolling down her cheeks, I guess I awakened the sad memories. "My mother was my comforter, anytime I wanted to lose hope, she was always there to lift my spirit and made me see reasons why I shouldn't give up" she continued. "I have always wanted to be a lawyer, that had been my dream since childhood but the dream got shattered the day I lost my mom to the cold hands of death," she said as she began to cry profusely.

@smc.arike.oba
CHEERS TO THE FUTURE!

The compound we lived in was bubbly in the evenings, as everyone would be back from work and would just gist, play games of cards or ludo, or just sit outside for company. I stayed outside talking to him and everyone until they brought his keys before going to my own room to do some laundry. Laundry in this case is washing with my hands, which takes some time. I remember finishing them in two hours and stepping out again at U.Y.’s call to talk.

@mrenglish
Faded Dreams

Without anyone pushing me, I read the essential government textbook and got acquainted with the contents. And also the same for Christian religious knowledge and History. I had to burn my night candles because I knew this could be my last chance.

@mmykel
The illusion of hope

My dad might have sent me to school, believing that education would be my biggest defence against the wiles of life. I must admit that he was right, only that the education that mostly helped to weather the storms of life wasn't one I got from the formal school system he sent me to; it was the one I got from him. That man, my dad, was unapologetically positive. He dared to hope, even when the odds were against him.

Third Place: Wins 2 Hive

Our third place winner is @phyna, with the story:

Let's Grow Together

Source

As we grew older and moved from one class to another, some of us started thinking with more mature minds. Our dreams from junior secondary school were no longer our ultimate goals. We began to realize the importance of pursuing our passions instead of just chasing dreams and fantasies.

Second Place: Wins 3 Hive

Our second place winner is @sofs-su, with the story:

Life with no reservations

Source

Lying in the Intensive care unit of the cardiac section later that day I considered the question of the chief surgeon who spoke to me right after the surgery was over. I thought - who lives life without hope or dreams? What kind of a life would that be? I had hopes of seeing my older son graduate as a neurosurgeon and the younger one as a doctor, maybe an Oncologist as he wished. Better still I wanted to see them married and play with my grand babies someday.

First Place: Wins 5 Hive

Our first place winner is @wongi, with the story:

The Defeated

Source

As expected, we didn't go near our opponent's goal post. This implies that we didn't score any goal. On the flip side, our goal post was like a mall; anyone could walk in at any time and score a goal. Need I tell you that we failed woefully. The scoreline was 3-0 at the end of the match. Honestly, I expected our opponents to score like ten to twenty goals but lucky us.

This Week's Prompt #57:

Home

Ideas:

  • The homecoming should’ve been a joyous occasion, but one person’s bitterness ruined everything.
  • If home is where the heart is, how come I don’t feel at home with my love?
  • Perhaps you had to find a home for yourself and your family, and it was no easy task.
  • Maybe you had to move home in the middle of the night under dangerous circumstances.

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
