Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #88
Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!
In this post, we'll announce the winners from last month's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.
Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...
We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.
Important notes:
- Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
- We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
- Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
- Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
- We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
- Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Highlighting @loveth97, with the story:
My sister the prankster
That Wednesday morning started unlike any other day. For some reason I couldn't figure out, I didn't sleep well during the night, and when I finally managed to get some shut-eye in the early hours of the morning I woke up too soon for my liking. I literally woke up on the wrong side of the bed as the saying goes.
Curator's comment :
Loveth97 writes a very natural CNF about a day when she woke up in a bad mood due to lack of sleep. Her story is full of funny images and they are the perfect background for her sister to prank call her. A well-written story that speaks of her fine sense of humor and allows us to get to know her as a person.

Highlighting @universoperdido, with the story:
The Deception
Rosy was the most naive girl in our group and the most uninformed about trending topics that appeared on social media. She had a very particular laugh which we always listened to. It was very easy to make her laugh, especially using terms that she didn't know, but that she thought were funny.
Curator's comment :
Universoperdido writes a very impactful CNF about playing pranks on fellow students. He ran with a group of friends, and one in particular had a sense of humor and loved to pull pranks. One day he got two of them to pull a prank on the fourth of the group, making her think that a professor had written her a love note. She was at first thrilled by it, but then realized when she talked with the professor that it was a ruse. She was quite angry, but they all made up after that. A very good read!

Highlighting @george-dee, with the story:
Pranks & Promises
I left a few hours later and didn't stop thinking about Ebunoluwa's reaction, but it didn't change anything. The truth is that she cheated but I promised never to share the story with everyone who knew us as lovers.
Curator's comment :
George-dee writes a story with a very strong arc. He keeps us suspended until the very end...why did he break up with his girlfriend? He shares one part of the reason with guests assembled at a party: There was a mutual agreement to end the relationship. The guests assure george-dee that his ex-girlfriend holds strong feelings for him. They call her and pretend he is injured. The girlfriend becomes very emotional. Yet, george-dee holds fast to his position that the breakup was mutual and in everyone's best interest. Only in the last line does the author confess to readers that the real reason for the breakup was that the girlfriend cheated. He had vowed to keep that a secret and he was true to his word. A well-told story.

Highlighting @rukkie, with the story:
I Was Only Joking...
I don't like it when she is angry with me and I felt bad about the whole thing. I was only pulling her leg but I never knew she would take it seriously and besides It wasn't entirely my fault that she didn't bother to call me before coming home. I would have told her the truth had she also told me she was coming home.
Curator's comment :
Rukkie writes an interesting CNF. Upon receiving a phone call from her sister who is studying away from home she learns that she will be back soon but not before going out to have fun with her classmates. She reacts by making up a lie. She tells him that she herself will also have fun on a beach outing with neighbors. The sister can't bear the thought of missing that trip to the beach and shows up willing to share the supposed reunion. Of course, a conflict arises, which is resolved naturally. This story is enlightening about the complex and contradictory processes of competition and affection between sisters.
This Week's Prompt 88:
"Take the Road Less Travelled"
leverageedu.comThe meaning : When faced with a decision, you may be advised to take the less travelled path. This is an encouragement to think independently and unconventionally, rather than conforming to the norm and choosing the option that everyone else would choose.
- Perhaps you always embrace the unconventional and irritate your loved ones in the process.
- Maybe a family member forced you to see things in a new light by following a less-travelled path.
Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!
Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
