Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #94
Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!
In this post, we'll announce the winners from last month's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.
Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...
We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.
Important notes:
- Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
- We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
- Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
- Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
- We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
- Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Highlighting @zerah, with the story:
Closing Chapters
But that day as I helped pack up those worn-out books from the dusty shelves of the bookstore. The smell of old books sniffing through my nose. It dawned on me that I was not just closing chapters of books but chapters of memories too. I was closing memories of my childhood days that I spent sometimes curled up in the small store, reading and helping my uncle attend to his customers. And also I was closing memories of days I argued about books and who was our favourite with my uncle.
Curator's comment :
Zerah writes a short, but poignant CNF about closing her uncle’s bookstore because physical books have gone out of fashion. Zerah equates reading (closing) chapters to closing chapters in life and ultimately closing the store. Cleverly realised and nicely put together.

Highlighting @wongi, with the story:
Teen Club
I could feel my throat constrict as I tried to swallow. All I could think of was saying my last prayers because my supposed protectors had long legs while I had tiny and not-fully-developed legs.
Curator's comment :
Wongi writes a well-constructed, clear account of a period in her childhood when she hung out with teenagers, kids who were as much as seven years older than she was. Dialog is excellent. Character growth clear.
Featured
Highlighting @madilyn02, with the story:
A Close call
The water was cold and murky, but I carefully navigated the road. Each step I took was a struggle but I focused on getting to my mom's stall. Her arms were wrapped around my neck and she held me so tightly. Her cries had reduced to whimpers.
Curator's comment :
Madilyn02 writes a creative nonfiction story that has all the elements of a dynamic fiction story--but it's real! This story is full of tension. It is well paced and enriched with vivid descriptions.
This Week's Prompt 94:
Wake-up call
If something that happens is a wake-up call, it should make you realize that you need to take action to change a situation.
In its literal sense, "wake-up call" means an actual call to wake you. However, you can take this prompt and make it your own by interpreting it in a figurative or literal manner: Maybe you failed to set up an actual wake-up call on exam day, or maybe the actions of a peer caused an epiphany.
Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!
Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
Rules
- You have 6 days to write your story from the date of this prompt post. Be sure to check the deadline countdown.
- Write a real-life story with the creative elements of fiction, like characters, dialogue, scene setting and a story conflict.
- Post your story in The Ink Well Community.
- Please use the tags #creativenonfiction and #inkwellprompt on these posts. Other possible tags: #writing #inkwellprompt #nonfiction
- Stories must be written in English. If you've translated the post, it's best to add the original version below the translation. Do not write mixed language paragraphs.
- Read and comment on at least two stories in the community. Add a link to your story as a comment on this post.
And be sure to remember to join The Ink Well community!

Hi Inkwell, my story on the prompt has been edited and the violent part taken out. Kindly check it out again, thank you.
Beautiful image! This prompt makes me think about the power of small things and hidden worlds. I'm curious to see the creative nonfiction pieces inspired by this
