The girl who liked to read forbidden books

If before reading those stories, the scribbles full of love and urgency, found in my sister's secret letters, seemed to me a swindle; now, while reading, I felt that written love could be perfect and incredible. So one day, I found my older sister writing a letter and asked her what she was doing. At first she hid it, but I told her:

I know they send you letters. So don't hide it. If you want, I can help you," I said as if I had all the secrets in the world inside me.

Evening

Elena’s shoulder shook and her whimpers were followed by a stream of tears. On the television screen, images from the plane crash showed a rising plume of smoke over the mountains. The plane had been struck by lightning and gone down over the Alps. All passengers on board were presumed dead.

Elena: Where are you?
Elena: Why didn’t you warn them?
Elena: I want to SEE you!!

The Freedom of Princess Eribor

Time drifted by. Meerboa thought about his favorite book. Reading wasn’t really a big thing for him, but he’d learnt to read with this one, because it was about a horse. Princess Eribor was a royal horse captured by evil thieves who intended to sell her for a life hauling plows, or turning a mill. The book wasn’t big but it had plenty of pictures. He remembered the ending. Princess Eribor was free, escaped from those who would mistreat her, escaped even from a world where she’d be bound by duty.

At dawn Meerboa made his way through the still sleeping village, going from building edge to fence post with his hands, ears, and nose as guides.

Rollercoaster of hearts and games

Chris's elation melted like cotton candy in the rain with the chime of Ashley's phone. He watched, heart sinking a little as she spoke to someone on her phone. He tried to decipher her words, piecing together the fragments of her conversation: “near the Ferris wheel,” “be right there.”

After a few minutes, she began excitedly waving at someone in the distance. Eyes following Ashley's gesture, Chris turned his head to spot the person she was waving at; it was a boy unfamiliar to him. Jealousy coiled around his heart, a viper slithering out from the shadows of his fear. He watched, paralyzed by a mix of disappointment and desperate hope.

My triumph against corruption

image.png

With what I interpreted as a subtle threat, I calmed myself and initiated some discussion in order to get presentable evidence on my voice recording.

"If at all I want to consider this, how do we go about getting the names of those to be paid and those not to be paid?" I asked Hajia.

She positioned her veil properly and drew closer to me. "Mr President, now you are talking. We will remove half of the names starting with each and every alphabet. It will be removed across the whole content of the document," she explained to me.

What's YOUR Favorite Ride?

image.png

Then it stops. Kay feels herself thrown back so forcefully that she feels she may puke! Rather than hitting her head back against the wall as anticipated, Kay is instead sent floating into a pitch black space, watching the inside of the UFO ride through a "doorway" slowly shrink away, the screaming fade, before the door is abruptly closed.

Kay tries to gather her bearings amid a flurry of questions in her head: Where am I? what just happened? did anyone see that happen?! how do I get out? which direction is which?... Kay is surrounded by pure darkness, and with the "doorway" to the ride now gone, she doesn't have the faintest idea of where to start looking for an exit... if there even is one.

There is no light. There is no sound.
There is nothing.

The Unforseen Turn

"I am here," he responded. "I called because I have your file with me."

Adrenaline surged through my veins, quickening my breath as goosebumps adorned my skin. The revelation that my file was on his desk without my knowledge triggered a primal dance of concern. In the administrative department, a file on Uche's desk without the person's awareness often signaled an offense. I ruminated on what could have gone wrong, knowing I hadn't committed any wrongdoing before taking my leave.

"What have I done?" I uttered, my voice unintentionally reduced to a whisper, betraying my growing anxiety.
