A wonderfully realized story. The child could be a metaphor for everyone who has ever overcome a great obstacle. This is the kind of story that should be read to a child, not because it is unsophisticated but because its message is so worthy. People may not believe in us. People may not truly 'see' us. But that doesn't diminish our value. That doesn't mean we can't 'do'.
Don't we all have secret powers, a part of ourselves no one sees, no one knows. It is those powers we draw upon when we accomplish our greatest feats.
