Welcome to the Weekly Fiction Prompt

Hello community members. As we mentioned recently post, we are phasing out the weekly contests and converting them to writing prompts. So here we go!

Stories from the Previous Week

Thank you to who posted a story for last week's prompt: "Back of beyond":

Author Shout-outs

We'd like to call out a few stories that got high marks from our curators.

@kei2

Beyond the Invisible Line

Curator comment:

@kei2 writes a very interesting and poignant story for the "back of beyond" prompt. Something mysterious is going on with a teenage girl, Meera, and her mother. The girl doesn't understand the strange shadows she sees beyond a demarcation line her mother tells her not to cross. And she is having strange dreams. Finally one night she sneaks out of her house and crosses the demarcation. She finds her old house, and her father sitting in it alone and crying and holding a picture of her and her mother. Then she knows that they are no longer living. Her mother tells her that they are waiting, for however long they need to, for her father to join them, and then they will all move on together. A nicely written story.

@popurri

Releasing Pain

Curator comment:

@popurri writes for the fiction prompt and comes up with an excellent response to the prompt. A healthcare professional has watched young men die and cannot bear the suffering any longer. She decides to go into a remote area and help those who might not otherwise have medical care. On her journey to this remote area she finds a healing to her own secret grief. This grief we learn is related to the death of her young son years before. The story is good, and intelligently written.

@rinconpoetico7

The Beyond

Curator comment:

It takes a while to ebb into the flow, but this is remarkable. @rinconpoetico7 delivers a mesmerising tension-paced thriller that pops the balloon. Perfectly absorbing and skilfully layered.

@lightpen

The Throne

Curator comment:

@lightpen writes a story about a king and succession that is not predictable. There are choices offered to the heir which keep our interest. The heir must choose between the honor of ruling, and the prospect of a constrained, controlled life. The challenge offered this protagonist is clearly assessed and we as readers are interested in the outcome.

@balikis95

Sarah's Life Lesson

Curator comment:

@balikis95 writes a sophisticated story that is worth reading. She attempts to experiment with time sequence in the narrative. Two readings helped me to sort the events and the people. I did enjoy her effort and the story is one with significance. It has a really good arc and great (the best part) character development.

But wait, there's more! We almost inadvertently bypassed mentioning this terrific author. Not only is her work often a cut above, but she is one of the most dedicated curators in the community! (Ten stories curated last week!) So we'd like to give one more shout-out for last week to @iskawrites!

@iskawrites

A Walk Through Hell to His Destiny

Curator comment:

As I read iskawrites' most recent fiction story I kept looking for a misstep. Even in a well-crafted piece there is almost always a flaw, an oversight in grammar, an inappropriate word. Not here. She really turned in a piece that was designed for a rather unusual prompt, and in no way does this story seem strained. It is a fantasy about a king and his exiled son, and it is one that works.

Fiction Writing Prompt of the Week

This week's prompt is: "Intuition."

What to do with this prompt?

The word "intuition" is defined as "the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning."

However, what's even more interesting than the definition, are these "related terms" which really help us to understand how we think about the meaning of intuition: hunch, instinct, clairvoyance, discernment, feeling, foreknowledge, perception, premonition, presentiment, gut reaction, second sight, sixth sense.

Tell us a story where your character has an intuition about something — a sense that something is wrong, or that something is about to happen, or that if they take a certain action, everything will turn out as they wish. Of course, you can interpret this word as you wish, as long as it inspires your story!

Let's see where your imagination takes you!

If you don't feel inspired by this prompt or the featured image, feel free to peruse any of our past prompts or our collection of idea-generators:

Writing Prompt Guidelines:

  1. See The Ink Well FAQ: Before you post in The Ink Well, we ask that you read our FAQ post to familiarize yourself with our important community rules and guidelines.
  2. Story link: Please be sure to post your story in The Ink Well community, and post a link to your story in a comment on this post.
  3. Hashtags: Please use these hashtags: #fiction #writing #inkwellprompt #theinkwell — as well as #dreemport, if you are also posting your story to the DreemPort site.
  4. Community support: When you post in The Ink Well, please be sure to visit the work of at least two other community members and comment on their work.
  5. Title: The title is up to you. You can come up with any title you wish. You do not need to name it after the prompt. Please do use the prompt word(s) within the story.
  6. Images: Please only use images from license free and creative commons sites, like Pixabay, Unsplash and Pexels. Images you find on the Internet are copyright protected and cannot be used. Be sure to provide all image source links.
  7. Length: We request that story word counts are a maximum of 1,500 words in length and a *minimum of 350 (ideally 750-1000 words). This is just a guideline. Longer stories are okay too, but they tend to get fewer readers. Additionally, The Ink Well admins appreciate keeping to that maximum story length for our time management. Thank you!
  8. Translations: If you post a story that has been translated from another language, please include both the English version and the translation.

Reminders: Be sure to also read our community rules. As always, please avoid violent, gory, bloody, brutal, sexist or racist themes and language, NSFW (not safe for work) stories like erotica, stories with a political or religious agenda, and stories featuring abuse of any kind. (We have a complete article about The Ink Well stance on violence and brutality for more information.)

Tips for Getting Curated by The Ink Well

There are some important elements of storytelling that make a story stand out, and make people want to read it, and keep reading. These include:

  • Great first lines.
  • Good settings.
  • Well-developed characters.
  • Integration of action, dialogue and narrative.
  • A conflict that intrigues the reader.
  • A "story arc" which results in the resolution of the conflict and brings the story to a satisfying conclusion.
  • And of course, we are looking for well-edited stories that are not littered with typos or grammatical errors.

You can find more on all of these topics in the catalog of fiction writing tips.
