The Song of the Doomsayer Bird

Curator comment:

@nancybriti1 writes a mystical and haunting tale about superstition spawned by the song of a particular bird, making a couple believe that "death is near." Their fear seems to begin to take shape when two bedraggled strangers come to their door, but all the travelers want is a place to sleep. The man and woman spit in the soil whenever they hear the bird. In the morning, the men are gone and they are hopeful that they scared death away... but then gunshots are heard in the distance, and they observe that their spit, which had mixed with rain, is gone. Very powerful, lyrical writing!

Dreams Might Just Be a Coincidence

Curator comment:

@phyna weaves a spell with this uncommon magical realism fiction. A young girl “sees” future ghosts. When she attempts to warn people they call her superstitious until the protagonists of her dreams start to drop! In the end the girl manages to save one of the characters that walk in her dreams by sheer persistence. Well realised, excellent tension throughout and nice, original resolution.

Starry Longing

Curator comment:

@gabmr's story in response to the superstition prompt is a rewarding read. It is sentimental, but not maudlin. It has phantoms, and spirits, but fear is not the driving force. A young man has lost his sister. She died while he was away and he longs to see her again. A neighbor tells him to go to a place in the forest, with her photo, and if the moon is full he might catch a glimpse of his sister. The young man goes with his dog to that place. There he is greeted by horrible spirits, but he persists. His sister does appear. She tells him she will take of him now, as he took care of her when she was alive. She tells him that when he looks into the sky at the stars, the memories will be there. Everything changes, but not the stars. The young man takes comfort from this advice and for the rest of his life, when he wants to bring memories of his sister alive, he looks into the night sky at the stars. The atmosphere in this story is excellent. We are in the moment as the young man explores the intimidating forest. We can see the loyal dog that follows by his side, and then runs off in fear.

Fiction Writing Prompt of the Week

This week's prompt is: "Gypsy."

Gypsies (or Romanies) are real world people, with millions living today across Europe, Eastern Europe and the Balkans, and yet they are also legendary. They are notorious travelers, well known for their Bohemian clothing and jewelry, and for their wily ways of earning money as well as pick pocketing.

Many books and stories have been written about gypsies, and their rich culture, and you can find some great information online to fuel your knowledge. What story might you tell about a gypsy — today or at some time in the past? Perhaps tell us about the adventure of traveling in a caravan with a gypsy tribe. Or an encounter between a gypsy child and one who lives a high society life. What if a child dressed up as a gypsy for Halloween, and then got swept along into a passing gypsy caravan by mistake? We hope that gets your imagination going!

Good luck. Remember, as always, we are looking for the elements of story. These include:

Great first lines
Good settings
Well-developed characters
Integration of action, dialogue and narrative
A conflict that intrigues the reader
A "story arc" which results in the resolution of the conflict and brings the story to a satisfying conclusion
