Stories from the Previous Week

Thank you to who posted a story for last week's prompt: "Gypsy":

Author Shout-outs

We'd like to call out a few stories that got high marks from our curators this week.

@bipolar95

Dared to Be Different

Curator comment:

@bipolar95 writes the sweetest fiction about a mother who wants to see her daughter safely married off instead of with her head in a book. She does a phenomenal job with character development, scintillating informative dialogue and atmosphere conjuring. The story is unusual, in that the mother attempts to deflect her daughter’s interest in studying because most stories are a total mirror of this attitude.

@mmeyenejoseph

A Traveling People

Curator comment:

@mmeyenejoseph takes us deep into the most horrible moment of a young gypsy girl's life, as soldiers burn the huts of her village. We hear horses and the clashing of swords. As the sounds of the invasion come nearer, Lavinia's parents hide her in a secret space under the floor. She hears the sounds of the soldiers as the invaders arrive, and her parents try to defend their home, remaining quiet just as her father said. A commander seems to sense that she is there, but is called away without discovering her. When the dust settles, she hears the familiar voices of relatives, and emerges from her hiding place. Her uncle and aunt whisk her away to safety, telling her in response to her questions about her parents, "They'll be with us wherever we go."

@nancybriti1

Gypsy Magic

Curator comment:

@nancybriti1 writes the story of Álvaro, who is bewitched by a beautiful young gypsy palm reader at a fair. The gypsy girl foretells his death in a cryptic message that suggests there is something magical in her message. Though he lives in fear, he is drawn back to her, spending a week with her in a romantic tryst that ends in a death-like experience once she moves on with the traveling group. Finally, after some time in this death state, Álvaro is coaxed by his friends and rises again.

Fiction Writing Prompt of the Week

This week's prompt is: "Blind ambition."

Ambition is generally a good thing, right? Well, in the case of ambition that is so forceful that others can be ignored or harmed along the way, it can be devastating.

Google's automated AI definition of blind ambition is:

Blind ambition is a strong desire to achieve something without preparation, direction, or clarity. It can lead to tunnel vision, irrational behavior, and a lack of consideration for consequences or the well-being of others. People driven by blind ambition may prioritize external validation and material gain over personal fulfillment and ethical considerations. This can have detrimental effects on both individuals and organizations, and can cause people to compromise their convictions, sacrifice their character, and use others to their advantage.

Tell us a story about a character with blind ambition. Perhaps the story is told by that person, and they come to a realization about those they have harmed in their drive to succeed. Or your story might be told by they wife or husband of the person with blind ambition, as they realize that they will never be as important as their spouse's goals. Or it could even be told from the perspective of the child of a parent with blind ambition. We hope this gets your imagination going!

Good luck. Remember, as always, we are looking for the elements of story. These include:

  • Great first lines
  • Good settings
  • Well-developed characters
  • Integration of action, dialogue and narrative
  • A conflict that intrigues the reader
  • A "story arc" which results in the resolution of the conflict and brings the story to a satisfying conclusion
  • And of course, we are looking for well-edited stories that are not littered with typos or grammatical errors — please use the free Grammarly tool for grammar and spelling checks (and not AI writing or rephrasing tools for revising)

You can find more on all of these topics in the catalog of storytelling tips.

If you don't feel inspired by this prompt or the featured image, feel free to peruse any of our past prompts or our collection of idea-generators:

Writing Prompt Guidelines:

  1. See The Ink Well FAQ: Before you post in The Ink Well, we ask that you read our FAQ post to familiarize yourself with our important community rules and guidelines.
  2. Story link: Please be sure to post your story in The Ink Well community, and post a link to your story in a comment on this post.
  3. Hashtags: Please use these hashtags: #fiction #writing #inkwellprompt #theinkwell — as well as #dreemport, if you are also posting your story to the DreemPort site.
  4. Community support: When you post in The Ink Well, please be sure to visit the work of at least two other community members and comment on their work.
  5. Title: The title is up to you. You can come up with any title you wish. You do not need to name it after the prompt. Please do use the prompt word(s) within the story.
  6. Images: Please only use images from license free and creative commons sites, like Pixabay, Unsplash and Pexels. Images you find on the Internet are copyright protected and cannot be used. Be sure to provide all image source links.
  7. Length: We request that story word counts are a maximum of 1,500 words in length and ideally 750-1000 words. This is just a guideline. Longer stories are okay too, but they tend to get fewer readers. Additionally, The Ink Well admins appreciate keeping to that maximum story length for our time management. (Note: We generally consider stories less than 750 words "too short!")
  8. Translations: If you post a story that has been translated from another language, please include both the English version and the translation.

Reminders: Be sure to also read our community rules. As always, please avoid violent, gory, bloody, brutal, sexist or racist themes and language, NSFW (not safe for work) stories like erotica, stories with a political or religious agenda, and stories featuring abuse of any kind. (We have a complete article about The Ink Well stance on violence and brutality for more information.) And do NOT use AI tools to write or manipulate your stories. You must provide your own unique content.
