Beneath the Bridge

Curator comment:

@mmeyenejoseph is such a terrific writer. This poignant and sad story tells the tale of a man so destitute that he cannot afford menstrual pads for his daughter who just started her monthly periods. They live under a bridge. In the story he considers several options for how to get out of the store with the product she needs, so she won't have to tear up her few clothes for that purpose, and by the time he escapes past the security guards, we are rooting for him to get away as fast as he can and succeed in his mission!.

The Eyes on the Wall

Curator comment:

@coolbabe88 writes a thoughtful piece in response to the hidden camera prompt. An apparently wealthy woman is the victim of multiple thefts. She calls her children and house staff together and quizzes them. Who is stealing my goods? Everyone adamantly declares innocence of the crimes. The theft victim installs secret cameras. She catches the thief in the act, calls the police and learns it is her brother, Liam, who has been stealing. She overcomes her anger when he explains he is desperate over debts he has accumulated. Her heart softens and she helps her brother. The story is well told and believable. Dialogue is used effectively. The arc is strong.

Between Cookies and Elves

Curator comment:

@osomar357 publishes a delightful story. It is as 'sweet' as the title suggests. A woman moves near the forest. Her parents tell her she should make friends with the elves in the forest by leaving them cookies and sweets every night. The children in the family do this and the mother allows them, even though she is certain they are eating the cookies every night. One day the mother is in the forest. Two men with evil intentions approach her. Suddenly they are struck by stones and are driven off. The woman's parents assure her the elves had saved her. She puts goodies out that night and a hidden camera. Sure enough, elves come to eat. Not only that, they clean her kitchen. She is persuaded that elves are visiting and ever after leaves them cookies and goodies. Really nice story.

Fiction Writing Prompt of the Week

This week's prompt is: "A long goodbye"

Welcome to the prompt of the week. Saying "goodbye" to someone can be easy, especially if you know you will see them at the end of the day or very soon. With spouses, good friends, and children going off to school, a goodbye can entail nothing more than a hug, a kiss or a wave.

But other times saying goodbye is terribly hard. When someone is leaving on a long trip, or they are heading off to a risky job, or perhaps even leaving forever, it's so much harder. These are the "long goodbyes."

Let's see your stories of goodbyes that are especially meaningful or challenging, of hugs that never seem to end, and the ways in which people who have a hard time saying goodbye take much longer to do so. Now of course your story does not need to be maudlin or sad, necessarily. Sometimes a long goodbye can be very silly, if two people are just truly in love and don't have to be apart for a day, let alone a week or more if one of them is going on a trip.
