A Tale from the Nigerian Civil War

Curator comment:

@The story by Terjix, in response to the Kryptonite prompt, takes us to a time in Nigeria's past when there was civil war. This highly relatable tale can be characterized as historical fiction. It seems the author did her research and has the facts down pat. She inserts into this history the narrative of a woman who is married to a man who enlists in the army in order to fight on behalf of Nigeria, against the rebels. Terjix gives us the history of the war, the personal romance, and then demonstrates how misguided passion leads to the demise of the husband. The story is effective and informative — the ideal blend of qualities for historical fiction.

Mr Mighty: Our Loved School Driver

Curator comment:

@Marriot writes a tense, well plotted fiction about students who manage to save their school bus driver’s life against stiff odds. Marriot lays the groundwork perfectly then builds on it via dialogue and action to create a character that the reader cares about as much as the protagonists do.

The Unbeatable One

Curator comment:

A dynamic and complete story is written by @zerah for the fiction theme. A fighter revered by his audience must face a fearsome opponent in the boxing ring. But the boxer has a weak spot. A woman, with whom he is in love, who is in the audience. The contrast between physical power and tenderness in a protagonist makes the piece an interesting work. The reader's desire is satisfied in the romantic ending.

Fiction Writing Prompt of the Week

This week's prompt is: "When the cat's away, the mice will play"

Welcome to the prompt of the week. For this week's prompt, tell us stories about situations where the people (or animals) get away with someone because no one is watching.

That is the meaning behind this funny expression. It could be children who romp around their house when their mother is away at the store. Or it could be people at a workplace, goofing off when the boss is on a business trip. Or students in a classroom, doing what they please because their regular teacher has been replaced by a substitute who does not know how to keep them in line. In situations like that, either one of the people who is taking advantage of the situation, or an observer, might say, "It just goes to show you... when the cat's away, the mice will play."

Let's say, for example, that some teenagers are hanging out together at one of their houses, and there are no adults around. One might say to the rest, "Got any beer around? When the cat's away, the mice will play!"

We hope you will come up with many more scenarios!

Great first lines
Good settings
Well-developed characters
Integration of action, dialogue and narrative
A conflict that intrigues the reader
A "story arc" which results in the resolution of the conflict and brings the story to a satisfying conclusion
