Unexplained Memories

ordlessly the grizzled veteran rose, and walked over to Paul's cot.
He stood there in silence for a few more seconds. "Impossible... how did you do it?"
Paul looked at his superior for a second. "Sir?"
"You survived that explosion at point blank range. You don't have anything except a few scratches - in fact a lot fewer scratches than anyone else on the team. You know that's impossible, you helped me recover those victims just last week..."
Paul took a deep breath, and closed his eyes. "I can't tell you what happened, Sir. You were there with me, what happened?"

The day Ana met the sea

image.png

Neither my mother nor I knew the sea. I was happy and jumped awkwardly on the sand as we walked to a shady coconut tree. When we got there, there was a man sitting on a rock. When he saw us coming, he immediately stood up and greeted my mom with a hug and a kiss on the cheek. As they parted, my mom took me by the hand and said:
Ask for his blessing, Ana. This is your father. -I was so surprised that I couldn't move. Then the man came closer, hugged me and gave me a kiss on my forehead.

When a party is more important than salvation

image.png

Today I laugh, but my mother's comparison of that party with Sodom and Gomorrah was not far-fetched, I remember everything clearly: *nuclear mushrooms, hippies of white smoke, irreverent music against the system, "El Loco" stealing his older brother Samy's beers, it was all perfect, perfect for a delicious juvenile hell on earth.
At sunset, reddened by the Caribbean sun, clouded by the stolen beers, and surprised by all the first times of new things I saw that day, I arrived home.

Sweet is Not For Me

"Close your eyes," Papa said. And without another word, he opened the door of our room and closed it as soon as he opened it, pulling my tooth without me realizing it.
Mama handed me a glass of warm water with salt. She asked me to gargle it.
"How do you feel? Does it hurt?" she asked.
I shook my head, smiled, and felt the gap in my gum with my tongue. I couldn't believe that Papa had pulled my tooth without sweating.
"Don't show your teeth gap. It won't grow if a lizard sees it," Papa said.

The Longest Threads of Winte

She held her breath, and spreading out her hand, she looked at the marvelous jewel. It shimmered and sparkled in the early morning light with the most vibrant reds, yellows, and blues. The effect was immediate and dazzling. It awakened emotions of wonder that she had not felt in a long time. A mosaic of memories ran through her mind at once. Singing voices, the smell of sweetly baked goods, the warmth of a flickering fire, laughter, and a tangle of sensations that she had long forgotten. She felt lightheaded but in a good way. Uplifted by a sense of wonderment; a soft smile spread on her lips.
“It’s so bea-“ she began to say, only to realize that she was alone in the cabin.
She sat up straight. Startled.

Siyan

image.png

The park had an air of something tingling that Siyan was breathing in. She couldn't place it but she loved the feeling. She could almost hear gentle whispers that soothed her entire being. The air was different and it felt magical. Her eyes skimmed the park and childhood memories came flooding her like a downpour. Siyan thought she saw something pink dancing in the mild wind. When she drew closer, she saw that it was a pink ribbon buried in the sand.

“This can't be. Could it be after all these years?” she asked no one in particular. Filled with curiosity, her eyes widened. Siyan grabbed the ribbon and tried to pull it out of the sand. The more she dragged, the more she felt as though something was pulling her in from the sand. The ground began to open before her eyes and before Siyan knew what was happening, the earth had swallowed her whole.
