The door of the leading van opened and Police Inspector Doris stepped out. She too was in full gear, down to the bulletproof vest. And she was the only one carrying a pistol. It was her weapon of choice for any operation whatsoever. After all, one of the upside of being in charge was getting to use whatever weapon she damn well chose. -@bruno-kema

The indefatigable, ever-clever, Inspector Doris. I did recognize her. You have your own Poirot, and she is delightful. She is not superhuman, or impossibly brilliant. She simply has a wonderfully deductive ability, and unfailing courage. I can never get too much of Inspector Doris. -@agmoore

The large window of my seat showed a blue sky in all its immensity, resting on a mountain range. In spite of going over hundreds of kilometers per hour, everything up there looked with a peaceful and enviable calmness. Oblivious to the earth, the clouds moved lazily, in no hurry to get anywhere. -@jadams2k18

Oh my, you hit it out of the ballpark with this one, @ jadams2k18 . So much of this story is told by saying very little, and holding back on over-explaining. The "condition" of the narrator ... what could it possibly be, that keeps him from becoming alarmed at an invasion of zombies? Many writers would have been compelled to describe these horrid things in gruesome detail. But it's not needed. The story is very gripping and compelling with the small details you provided. Well done. -@jayna

The train glided across the landscape at a steady pace, lurching and braking as it neared stations. The distant mountains shimmered in the morning light, their peaks bathed in pink-gold bands of pale sunlight. -@zwhammer

That day, Javier waited anxiously for them, he had found a map among the old books that were in the attic and it marked with an X what could be a treasure.
Curiously, the same was from the house's courtyard and he deduced that by looking at the inscriptions on the objects that were there. -@joseph1956

An exercise that plays on the reader's curiosity in an interesting way to give an unexpected twist.

Steven walked deeper inside the room, seemingly he saw nothing. He then unclipped his walkie-talkie and spoke into it.

"There's no sign of anyone here. Over!" He said as his eyes scanned the entire room.

"He's right behind you." I shouted.

"I can't hear you. Speak up. It seems like there's interference." -@ubani1

This is my kind of horror, @ubani. In my youth I was a fan of de Maupassant and Poe. Both of these authors were masters of horror, but there was little blood that flowed in their stories. They played upon the mind, and our instinctive fears. You do a good job of that here. -@agmoore

A wonderful, gently, moving story. The father's journey on the train is both symbolic, and real. A train is a perfect metaphor for the journey he is traveling into the future. It is also a metaphor for the journey he traveled in life. -@theinkwell/center>
