Winner Announcement and Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #100

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Featured

Winner for the month of August @nancybriti1, with the story:

Manuel, the ice cream boy

It was about 9 o'clock at night, when my aunt arrived in the usual car. Mom and she went into the room and after cries and screams from my aunt and my mother, my aunt Nelly grabbed her things and got back into the car which started immediately.

Curator's comment :

Nancybriti1 writes a nearly perfect story in response to the creative nonfiction prompt. This story is perfectly calibrated. It is as much about mood and atmosphere as it is about drama.

Featured

Highlighting @popurri, with the story:

Change of plans

"But, mom! you don't like enclosed places and the room has no window. What if they use the car? And besides, you don't like to talk much. Can you imagine that lady every morning or afternoon knocking on the door, knock knock knock, for any excuse to talk to you?"

Curator's comment :

This story is told in an even voice, but the subtlety of expression takes nothing from the effect. We are relieved also when we learn she has passed on this apartment. A well told, clear narrative.

Featured

Highlighting @ridgette, with the story:

On The Spur of the Moment

I instantly met Ean's gaze as soon as I arrived in our area. My disappointment doubled when I noticed that all of my groupmates were all regulars.

I pressed my lips into a thin line to prevent myself from cursing my rotten luck.

Curator's comment :

Ridgette writes an engaging, tense CNF. Excellent pacing and darn good structure, which makes for interesting reading.

This Week's Prompt 100:

Don't count your chickens before they hatch.

The Cambridge Dictionary defines the idiom as meaning : you should not make plans that depend on something good happening before you know that it has actually happened.

  • Perhaps you took on a loan on the strength of a glowing report by your boss, which you believed would result in a raise. Unfortunately, the cash did not follow the compliment.
  • Maybe you thought that your superior brain power was enough to get you through the examinations without the need to study. Little did you know!

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
