Winner Announcement and Creative Nonfiction in The Ink Well Prompt #87

Source

Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll announce the winners from last month's contest and provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

  • Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
  • We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
  • Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
  • Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
  • We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
  • Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Winner

Highlighting the (20 Hive) winner for May @popurri, with the story:

She dreamed of being an astronaut

We could spend hours running or climbing on the beds and jumping into dusty red deserts, or enter dark caves under the bunks, where giant spiders lived or where we met the Venusian, green beings with two antennae on their heads.

Curator's comment :

In this spectacular CNF popurri acquaints us with her wistful memories of her youth and her remarkable older sister who made life an absolutely adventure. P tells us about her enjoyment of her sister’s obsession with Star Trek and how the show infused their games and their life with a measure of danger and fun. A sweet read full of longing and nostalgia.

Highlighting @lightpen, with the story:

My optimism in daydreaming

The previous month, after listening to my favorite reggae musician for hours, I went into a deep level of imagination. I went to Jamaica on a tourism voyage. I met a Jamaican lady that I fell in love with. In another few months, we got married in the Caribbean, with the Ziggy performing on the occasion.

Curator's comment :

Lightpen writes for CNF a testimony of how he overcomes the momentary impossibilities of life by daydreaming. His story is a moving text that allows us to look at his imaginative resources to overcome difficult moments and set goals for the future. Good work.

Featured

Highlighting @universoperdido, with the story:

You Can't Solve it by Dreaming

The music in my head was intensifying. It was no longer pleasurable, but a torment. I finished printing the report and, still immersed in my fantasy world, I hummed the melody of the soundtrack quietly, while my partner looked at me with a faint smile on her face.

Curator's comment :

Universoperdido writes better and better. This time he brings us a story about his immense capacity for daydreaming. This time his writing is almost surrealistic, interspersing his need to perform at work with the suggestion that the movie Pirates of the Caribbean exerts on him. The literary product of these two contrasting realities is a mixture in which the reader is immersed with great pleasure.

This Week's Prompt 87:

"Pull someone's leg"

Merriam-webster Dictionary. The meaning : to make someone believe something that is not true as a joke : to trick or lie to someone in a playful way.

  • Perhaps you were part of a prank that went horribly wrong, and you’ve only now realised, with hindsight, that the consequences could’ve been dire.
  • Maybe a friend or family member enjoyed pulling your leg, but you found it irritating and did something to repay the perpetrator.

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

Have fun and good luck! We look forward to reading your stories.
