Once I had a friend.
His name was Gillian,
Sometimes I called him Fred.
He acted like a civilian
He liked to stand and watch.
He was terribly shy,
He would always run and hide.
Only coming out to spy
But in him I could always confide.
Gillian would hide in my clothes.
Then scuttle away when I was close.
To be frank
He had way too many eyes for me to pull a prank.
Still, Gillian was always there.
Even if I never really knew where.
Whenever I felt alone, he'd be right there, standing on his own.
With eight legs and eight eyes.
He was the best friend a girl could ever find.

What a great ode to a spider! The clues gradually build: hiding in clothes, watching with many eyes, wary and quick to scuttle away - on 8 legs. I love spiders, and love it that a little girl would befriend this one.
