Evans’ Guitar-his place of solace

in The Ink Well8 days ago

The noise from the room down the hallway grew louder and more intense, at first a normal conversation was heard from the room but it quickly escalated into a heated argument.

"Oh God! Not again, will this ever stop?" Evans murmured to himself, blocking his ears with his hands.

He was the only child of Mr and Mrs Adams, a family once filled with so much love and laughter, that is, until his mother got a job in the entertainment industry, a job that required her staying away from home for days on end. Though Evans and his father tried to cope with her absence, the strain quickly took its toll—from coming back late at night to being away from home for days, she wasn't there anymore and It was just too much.

His father, a medical doctor, worked for long hours at the hospital, so most times, Evans was left to his own devices, with no one to properly care for him. The family dynamics had shifted radically.

"Honey, I think this new job is placing a lot of demands on this family, Evans' teacher called earlier to complain about his grades and how they had dropped drastically, he also said that the once vibrant boy had withdrawn into his shell and even asked if everything was okay at home" Evan's father said to his mother, one evening;

"You know how much I have longed to be in this industry, how it's been my life-long dream, I can’t let this opportunity slip through my fingers. Besides I have been a housewife for way too long, I cannot continue to live that way anymore" Mrs Adam spoke indignantly.

"But I’ve always provided, I've always made sure you never lacked a thing, I’ve never compromised on your comfort" Mr Adam continued.

"I know, yes.... I know all of that! You've been the only one living and I've had no life outside these four walls for the past fifteen years, that is why I need you to understand that I need this job like my life depended on it."

"What about our son, Evans? Who takes care of him? He still needs a Mom around."

"You are sounding as if I'm going somewhere and never coming back " Mrs Adam replied as she rolled her eyes in exasperation. "Evans would be properly taken care of, I will hire a nanny."

"A nanny? A nanny, a stranger to take care of our son? You must be joking!"

"You should know by now that I am not!" She shot back at him."

That was the conversation that marked the beginning of the end, the arguments continued as Mrs Adam's career blossomed and she became more alienated from her family, more days away from home. Evans who was caught in the middle tried his best to cope with the situation.

Feeling abandoned and seeking solace, Evans found companionship in a group of neighborhood friends who had a band. He quickly fell in love with the guitar, and playing music became his escape from the chaos at home. After school, every evening, he would join his friends to practice, spending hours strumming his guitar and forgetting his troubles.

Finally the rift between his parents could not be bridged, the connection was broken and there was no remedy. So a divorce was inevitable!

Evans was devastated and refused to leave his room for days, he just continued playing his guitar to drown his sadness, he did not understand it all, he didn't understand what happened to his once lovely family. He looked back with nostalgia at how they'd been inseparable, loving, laughing, his Mom and Dad, and how he was so proud of them and looked forward to having his own family, someday, following in their footsteps.

But that was not to be! What went wrong? Tears streamed down his face, he looked round the room once again, home no longer. Now that the divorce was over, he was going to live with his Dad in the United States and they would be flying that afternoon. He would surely miss his Mom so much.

"Home is over." He whispered as he picked up his guitar—the only thing meaningful in this life of chaos.

The moment he stepped on the plane, a fresh wave of nostalgia hit him harder this time. He was living everything he had ever cherished, behind, his Mom, his friends, his home. Memories came rushing back—reminiscing the good old times, before the divorce.

He knew nothing would ever be the same again!

So, his dad would rather ask for a divorce? Isn't the same thing as his mom going to work and not being present in Evans' life?

I have a suggestion, if he wanted someone to look after Evans that much, why didn't he give up his own job and stay home?

I know I am not being empathetic towards Evans right now but I am pained at how much men always want women to sacrifice when they wouldn't do the same if the tables turned.

I love your pov, the man would have given up his job and become a stay-at-home dad.

Your story beautifully captures the pain, nostalgia, and resilience that come with losing the comfort and security of a once-loving home

It's heartbreaking to know that things would never be the same again.

Indeed, a tragic story! The "materialistic world" won over the "divine bondage"!!

It's indeed tragic, they shouldn't have let this happen!
