Fractured

in The Ink Welllast month

A lot can happen to a person in two years. For Kate, two years were enough for her dear husband to fracture who she was.

"Honey, your breakfast is ready" Kate said in a high pitched voice, loud enough for her husband who was in the bedroom to hear.

Maxwell didn't respond, but she was sure he heard her. Kate had put incredible effort into making that meal. It was his favorite, Pancakes. She prepared it like it was a chemistry project. Putting the right amount of everything needed to make the perfect pancakes, or at least, pancakes that were perfect enough for her husband's taste.

Maxwell came downstairs to the dining table, after what seemed like an agonizing century. He looked at the food with disgust, like he had seen a plate of worms. He stared at this wife with equivalent disdain, and without saying a word, he left the house.

Kate's heart broke. Her heart has been broken for a while, but the pieces left broke again. Her husband had changed completely.

Maxwell wasn't always this cruel, at least not to her. He was the sweetest. He knew just the right thing to do or say to her. He swept her off her feet and she didn't even get a chance to stand her ground. However, she saw the signs of his cruelty. She saw how he treated others with disdain but she didn't really take it seriously. After all, he gave her the best form of love she ever experienced.

One beautiful morning, while the sun watched and the trees danced, Maxwell proposed to her. It was the easiest decision she made in her life. She didn't even second guess for a second. Her "yes" was instant, and filled with excitement.

After two years of marriage, Maxwell had turned into a bitter person. She could barely recognize him anymore. He treated her with the greatest disrespect. There was barely any conversation between them where he didn't scream at her. He didn't eat her food anymore. She loved him, so much, and despite everything he did to her, she believed that someday he would come around. She held on to the hope that that was just a phase.

On this fateful day, Kate burst into tears as her husband left. All that effort to prepare his favorite meal, hoping that he would at least appreciate her, went to waste. In her agony, she called her best friend, Tina, who came running to her house to comfort her.

"How much of this torture will you keep on taking girl?" Tina asked, obviously infuriated by the situation.

"I know you want me to leave him, but he's my husband. I can't leave him" Kate responded.

"You can't or you won't?" Tina asked with a judgemental look on

"Tina, I called you here because I needed you. Let's just not talk about divorce, okay?" Kate fired back

"Alright, if you say so"

The next day, Kate and Maxwell had to attend a party with friends together as a couple. At least, they had to pretend like they were a couple still madly in love with each other. She knew she didn't have to pretend, she still loved her husband, maybe by a thin thread now, but she wasn't sure if her husband would be able to keep up the act.

They got to the party, and in no time, Maxwell began the process of drowning himself in alcohol. He took one glass after another, like he had a mountain load of sorrows to forget. Kate tried severally to stop him, but her efforts were futile. She painfully watched as her drunk husband became a nuisance in the party, and there was nothing she could do about it.

Suddenly, he approached her.

"Give me the car key" he said with eyes that hinted he was seeing more than one image of her

"I can't give you this key Maxwell. There's no way you're driving in this condition. You could hurt or kill yourself" Kate replied as she struggled with her husband who was reaching for her bag to get the key.

Suddenly, he yelled at her
"Give me that damn key woman!"

The sound of him yelling resonated so much that the loud music could barely mask it. Everyone around turned, trying to identify the source and watch the drama brewing. Kate felt so embarrassed, so she let him have the key to avoid further embarrassment. However, it was too late as a lot of people were looking and whispering.

Maxwell, went to the car and drove off, without waiting a second for his wife whom he came with. Kate stood outside, devastated and weak. She couldn't believe that Maxwell drove off without her. This was the last straw. She was fed up.

As she stood there, tears rolling down her cheeks, a fine young man approached her. He was tall and muscular. Just her kind of man.

"Are you okay ma'am?" he asked in the softest tone.

"Yes I'm okay" Kate replied.

"You're obviously not. I saw what happened back at the party, and I saw that he drove off, leaving you. Can I drive you home" he asked

"No thanks. I'll find my way home" she said

"Please, I insist" he persisted.

After a minute, deliberating within herself, Kate agreed.

They got into his car and he drove off.

"I'm Dylan. What's your name?" he asked as he drove.

"I'm Kate" she replied.

He noticed that she was really sad. He knew she needed a distraction from everything she was going through.

"You know what, let me buy you dinner. I know a perfect restaurant"

Kate didn't hesitate. She needed to take her mind off her problems. Within minutes, they were eating at a restaurant. Dylan was a funny guy, and he did a good job of making Kate laugh. For a moment, Kate was happy.

Dylan knew just the right things to say. He was cute. Occasionally, she was would stare at his grey eyes, she could drown in them over and over again and not get tired. His voice wasn't just soft, it was soothing. It gave her a dopamine rush.

He took her to the fair where they rode a rollercoaster and had all kinds of fun. For the first time in a long while, Kate felt like she had no problems. A feeling she would give anything to sustain. Dylan seemed like the perfect gentleman. She felt light, at least for the night and it was because of him. Eventually, he dropped her off at home.

Kate got into the house and found her husband wasted and sleeping on the couch. She couldn't care less. She went straight to bed.

The next morning, Kate woke up to a "Good morning gorgeous" text from Dylan. When they exchanged contacts the previous night, he promised that he would be the first person the text her that morning and he kept to his word. Kate smiled on seeing his text. Dylan had a way with words. He made her feel special. He made her feel like she was the queen of the entire world.

Within 3 weeks, they fell in love with each other. Kate kept her romance with Dylan a secret because she needed to find the courage to leave Maxwell, who was now concerned that her attitude towards him had changed.

One day, during a gathering of both her family and Maxwell's, she decided to make an announcement.

"When I got married to Maxwell, it was the happiest moment of my life. I thought we would accomplish great things as a couple. I was ready to give him my all, and I did. I loved him so much, too much in fact, and it ruined me. He ruined me. Maxwell has maltreated me in ways no human should, and I blame myself for letting all that happen. I want to announce that I am getting a divorce."
Kate said with no remorse.

Everyone was shocked to the bones, but Maxwell appeared to be the most shocked. He never thought in his wildest imagination, that Kate would ever muster the guts to leave him. It was the definition of a scandal, but Kate didn't care, she stopped caring a long time ago. She now had a man in Dylan who appreciated and loved her genuinely, and she was willing to explore that love with him.
