Game day

in The Ink Well5 days ago

It was a sunny Saturday morning. I woke up to check the time on the clock.

“9am?” I gasped.

“How could I have slept this long?” I asked myself.

I woke up really late, and I had to be at my family store early that day. There was a lot of work waiting to be done. I rushed out of bed, freshened up, and left for the store. Unfortunately, there was terrible traffic on the way there. It was the kind of traffic that is agonizing. It was so slow, that I wished it could move as fast as a snail.

Eventually, when it seemed like the road was getting a little free, two drivers who were in front, in an attempt to overtake and maneuver their way, managed to crash into each other. That was the beginning of another delay, as they came out guns blazing, confronting each other.

“Look at what you did. You must pay for the damage you did to my car” one of the drivers said as he grabbed the other driver by the collar.

“You must be joking, you were the one driving recklessly, now you hit my car and you’re asking me to pay for the damage to yours. You must repair my car” The other driver said as he grabbed the man accusing him by the collar as well.

Meanwhile, they completely blocked the road while all of this drama went on, causing a delay in movement for others. I sat in the bus I boarded, frustrated and defeated. I was so late and it seemed like there was nothing I could do about it.
After some minutes of shoving and shouting at each other, both men got into their cars and drove off. The road got free and I was finally able to get to the store.

In total it took about 45 minutes to get there but that wasn’t the worst part of my morning. The weather was so hot that day, one could melt. The discomfort from the heat was almost unbearable. I was having a bad day but the weather made it worse.

I started the work I had to do and it was really hectic. Coupled with the bad day I was having, it was difficult to continue working efficiently, but I tried.
Suddenly, I remembered that I had a football game to watch later that day. My favorite football club made it to a cup final, and it was a chance to win a trophy after a very long time. I had almost forgotten how it felt for my club to win a trophy because it had been a lot of years since they last won one.

I was incredibly excited about the game, not just because of the joy of my team potentially winning, but also because of the bragging rights I would have if my club won. I would have something to brag and banter about with rival fans. I wasn’t going to miss it for anything. However, on the other hand, I knew there was a possibility that my club could lose, and that would be both heartbreaking and embarrassing. I would be a laughing stock and a subject of banter for my friends.

I did everything I could to be done with work before the game started. As the time for kick-off got closer, everyone around came to watch, including fans, rival fans and neutrals.

The game started and I became nervous because the opponents were obviously better than my team. However, all nervousness vanished when my team scored the first goal. I remember shouting at the top of my voice in utter celebration of that goal. The game continued and minutes later, my team scored the second goal. I jumped for joy as the goal went in. I knew that at this point, my team had one hand on the trophy. They just had to hold on a little longer.

However, things started taking a turn when the opponents began mounting a lot of pressure on my team until they were able to score one goal. My anxiety hit the roof as the opposing team kept on piling pressure to equalize as the final minute drew nearer. I could feel my heart beating so fast. I clenched my fist, hoping that my team wouldn’t slip and give up their lead at the death.

“What's wrong with that player?” a fan sitting next me shouted in anger after watching the player make a mistake that almost led to a goal.

Finally, the referee blew the whistle and there were shouts of joy all around. I also screamed for joy. It was a magical moment. I had hoped for this outcome and it happened. It felt good having to watch the club I supported since I was a kid fight so hard to win even when all the odds were against them. I hadn’t seen that level of resolve from my team in a long time, and I was proud on that day. It was a wonderful day for me, one filled with celebration, and definitely one I would never forget.
