Agreed! Except the need to see his family having escaped death by a hair's breadth to let them know he's fine, pushed him to go home first. If the story had continued, he would have had to see the doctor!
Experience has taught that in the face of such an ordeal, the first place a person would turn to is family. Everything else comes second.
