Back to school: the messy surprise

I don't really like the rainy season, especially when I am not prepared for the rain.
On the 6th of January, I returned to school; funny enough how I was able to get to the hostel just before the downpour started, but it still affected my mood.

The hostel was an absolute mess; I started having regrets coming back early cause I ended up being the only one coming back to meet the surprise of a mess.
I stood by the window breathing in the dust raised by the rain. It was better than the stuffy air from the messy room.
Once I would turn and sigh, looking at the clothes that were left behind scattered, some shoes and slippers on the bed. And snack wraps in the wardrobe and every other place, there was even some water on the floor.
“What exactly happened here" sigh… I could remember the state of the room before I left and it was far from different.

I didn't have a single strength that night, so I had dinner outside in the hostel field, and when it was time to sleep, I pushed all the refuse away from my bed and made my area manageable.
I slept well, so when I woke up the next morning, I was feeling so well. But my mood was not so good.
On a normal day, the way I felt would make me wake up with a smile, jump out of bed, and start a bright day.

But I wasn't in a good mental state so I woke up with the gloomiest face ever. I sat in bed for minutes looking at the room and planning how I would start, grumbling with every look at the work ahead of me.
Finally, I got up from the bed, and the first thing I did was pack up all the clothes and shoes, find a bag that was okay, and put them all in. After I picked up the broom and went to work, I dusted some places and did a clean sweep.
After that, I went to a neighboring room so I could borrow a mop stick.

When I got to the room, there were only two people back: Tosin and her cousin Amaka.
“Chin chin how are you?" Amaka greeted.
But I just sighed and went straight to the mop, "I need your mop, I will return it immediately after I am done,”
"What is wrong?” Tosin immediately noticed the abnormality in my reply and tone.
“It's nothing," I said as I didn't even give a look at anyone's face and returned to my room.
"Okay, oh!” I heard Tosin say from inside her room before I went far. I knew she felt a kind of way the way I responded to her, she felt bad.
But I wasn't in the mood at all.

Immediately I got to my hostel, I started mopping and was done in no time; when I was done with mopping and the room was sparkling clean, I didn't stop to take in the feeling of my achievement cause it wasn't complete just yet.
I went straight to return the mop stick back to the tosin's room.
I reached there, and I didn't even talk; I just gestured to them with the mop; they were both sitting on their beds. And since the atmosphere had already been set from the start, they both just nodded and went back to their business, and I dropped the mop stick and left.

When I returned to my room I didn't rest but went straight and had my bath.
I was done with my bath and came out, and the scent in the atmosphere was heavenly; the combination of the scent from my soap and that from my body cream was perfect.
I laid down on my bed and took it all in, the joy of being in a tidied place again.

After some time I then realized something as I was now in a rather normal mental state. I had one more thing left to do. The atmosphere I left between Tosin and Amaka was quite a messy one; I was doing a clean sweep so I had to go over and tidy up the mess I made by myself, too.

Just then to my surprise, there was a knock on my door
“It's tosin," the voice behind the door sounded.
"Oh come in,” I answered with a cheerful voice.
As Tosin came in her eyes widened with realization as she scanned the room, and then she busted out with laughter as she said "No wonder you were so gloomy,” haha "Me and Amaka saw the room through the window when we came to check to check if you were back yet,”
"Thank God, he gave me the strength,” I was very glad she understood me.
“You are very good at cleaning,; how would you feel about getting a job?" Tosin said and our laughter must have surely echoed through the hostel corridor.

I really enjoyed reading this your story @zain-ab001 . You really captured the frustration that follows returning to a messy hostel. This is a story I can relate to.

Thank you. Returning to a messy hostel is indeed frustrating especially when you left it clean 😭

To start will be difficult after observing the situation of the room. What a great job well done.

Lovely story and u made it easier to comprehend. Seeing the condition of the hostel must have been a horrible sight but i am glad u were able to put yourself together

Thank you. In that kind of situation one has to do what I can, because I can't stay in a dirty place for any reason and still call myself a neat person

I loved the extra layered insight of realising that your attitude and behaviour had caused a 'mess' with your friends, and how 'cleaning' that up became your priority. Your piece would have benefited from a proofread and an edit in Grammarly or Google Docs to identify and correct basic spelling and punctuation. Just be sure not to use any of the advanced AI features of editing software.

Thank you. I probably mistakenly put the original instead. Because I am sure I used grammarly.

It is a very understandable and beautiful story, thank you for sharing with us.
