what UP everyone!
alright so i hopped on an airplane and flew to brazil.

i didnt have my phone handy but he was standing there holding up a sign he drew on his ipad that said SKATEHIVE QUEEN with a picture of the skatehive logo lol.
The first thing i noticed when we got in the car and started cruising was the cool architecture. i still want to learn more about it. the hills of rio are covered in what are called favelas which are like "slums" but they look really cool. they are like hand made brick and cinder block forts, that people live in for free. i guess the deal is, they dont have to pay taxes if their home is "unfinished" so they just leave them like that so they dont have to pay taxes. its kind of a cool off-the-grid vibe. the legit buildings are old ones the spanish built and modern-looking condos that actually kind of look like the favelas in color, and the shapes they use. i still need to confirm this theory. it would be cool to go to an architecture museum here. the homie @xvlad was there with his pops to greet me at the airport.

Vlad's parents are super nice. it was awesome meeting them i just wish i could speak Portuguese to them. but his mom and i were talking using the google translator. his dad and i just talk to each other in the separate languages and have no idea what each other is saying but we use facial expressions and stuff to communicate haha.

We got a super good Açai bowl by the beach. they mix into the Açai what is called Guaraná (gwarana) which is a slightly caffeinated fruit that grows in the amazon.

it makes the flavor slightly different from what im used to and i think its way yummier. This is not the same fruit as what they use to make "guava paste" which is like a thick gel of guava that we had with cheese which is called "romeo and juliet"

ive never had bananas as good as these. they probably grow them here. i will check out a fruit market today.

check out this little red crab. the water is freshwater that goes into the ocean. its what we were riding the taxiboat on. the homie @doblershiva is a taxi-boat driver and we got to ride around with him as he picked up customers. it was so cool. there are all these little islands people live on which require a boat to go anywhere from.

Pedro pointed out this crane bird that had this crazy beak mutation like a platapus where his beak turned flat at the end and he said it was because the bird ate one of those red crabs lol.

dude! what a killer post!
The favelas were built on preservation areas, like the national parks in the US. But like everything in Brazil is out of control, it all starts with one person breaking in and building and then others will follow and the authorities didn't do anything about it at the time. Now the problem is so big that it became impossible to turn back and remove all those people from those illegal constructions. They don't pay taxes because they are all illegal. All those houses are built with no regulations and some are risky to live in. They are also not free, most are "owned" by people who just took advantage of the situation and built many of them to rent out. It's just completely out of control, these areas are usually dominated by drug lords or militias, and they have their own laws. If you want to see (visit) a curiosity, there is a park called Catacumba, in Lagoa district. There was a favela there in the 60's or 70's that was removed by public authorities, now it's just forest with hiking trails, but you can still find some favela houses lost in the middle of the forest in the trails.

The bananas is also a common thing that all foreigners say when they go to Brazil, it's a different type of bananas, called "banana prata" that I've only seen in Brazil. I don't know why they are not exported, but my guess would be that they probably don't last long for long trips to be exported as the ones you usually see in the US. But we also have the type you see in the US, when you go to the market look for "banana d'água", it's the same one you find in the US.
What a great start! Hope you enjoy the rest of your trip as much as your first day.
