Introduction
It's true! The wait won't be long now. We're finally going to see the Genesis and Trial of the Gods chests migrated to the ImmutableX L2 early next year:

This has been one of the major topics of complaint from the players, as unfulfilled promises go, together with the infamous $500,000 2019 World Tournament.
To recap, cards were the first assets to be migrated, around April to June 2021 (in stages). Cosmetics were migrated in November 2022.
According to the announcement, an L1 snapshot will be taken on January 15th and the minting on L2 will happen on February 19th.
But what are chests? If you want to go back to 2019, here's a blog post explaining them. A tradable chest is a bundle of 6 card packs. Cards in a chest are not determined or minted until the chest is opened. Some chests were distributed as rewards to pack buyers; others were sold in the shop for a small premium compared to packs.

Chests details
There are 4 types of chests at this point in time. I could only find recent trades (and a place to swap) for Rare Genesis Chests.

How to check how many you have?
The simplest way I could find is to search for your address in Blockscout. Then click on 'Tokens', any chests you own should appear there. Here is an example from a random address I picked up from the owners' list:
How much are they worth?
It's hard to say. The market on L1 is extremely inactive, and I could only find recent data for Rare Genesis Chests. The latest ones were sold for $13, but if you look further back the prices are all over the place. I do think the chests will be worth more than this, even if the card prices are now historically low. Some of the factors that could contribute to price appreciation are
Offer is probably very low: many Chests are lost in inactive wallets or belong to players who left the game a long time ago;
The game is at an all-time low in active player numbers. If the game becomes more popular, these cards will be scarce;
Chests work as a speculative item and a collectible. Some people will want to own some just for the bragging rights, or to sell later.

The migration to ImmutableX L2 is great news and should alleviate a lot of community concerns.
I liked the details about the different types of chests and how to check the ones we own. The possibility of appreciation due to low supply and collectible interest makes it all the more exciting.
