Having a Blast with Gods Unchained! (...and Spell Boost Makes the Blast Bigger!)

With all the developments that have been happening with Gods Unchained lately, I've found myself playing more than ever and really enjoying it. I can't even remember when I first downloaded the game client, it may have been about 2 years ago. All I do know is that I regret not giving it more attention sooner. When I first encountered it the game was very buggy and there wasn't the wealth of resources that can be found now to help new players get started.

Thankfully about 6-8 months ago I rediscovered the game, purchased some cards and have been a steady player since. I'm just about to hit level 160 (I'm curious what crazy levels the most dedicated players have achieved!) Until recently I would play about 30 matches a week concentrated around the weekend to maximize the value of my time by earning more rewards in the Weekend Ranked competition. However with the launch of the GODS token and the Blessing of the Gods event to earn more of those tokens, I've been doing my best to knock out 10 matches a day to maximize rewards!

Obviously the more you play, the more scenarios and decks you experience and your knowledge and strategy of the game grows. For the first time I actually had a rough concept in mind and built a deck from scratch that's proving to be fairly competitive. Up until this I was relying mostly on copying other people's decks and experimenting with them, but here I just headed to the Workshop and started picking cards for my "Block, Boost, & Blast" deck.

The deck centers around frustrating the enemy with a bunch of frontline creatures, with added armor whenever possible! Mix in direct damage spells and spell boosting creatures and see what you can pull off! In my header image you can see my Deception opponent had managed to take out all my frontline blockers but had completely spent themselves and was now cardless with very little on the board. Though their health sits at double mine in the screenshot... that only lasts for another second! My Snowstorm Spire had been safely shielded for multiple turns and built up a Spell Boost of +7! My two Guardian Simulacrums likewise brought an extra +1 apiece which led to them having a beefy 9 armor of protection, as they calculate their armor based off of the total Spell Boost at the end of each round.

This round I've dropped the death stroke! A Scholar of Power descends on the board and all of the sudden I'm sitting on a total spell boost of +19! Now that 0 mana cost Rune of Fire I've had tucked away after earlier receiving it from a Choralis Rune Moth goes from doing 3 damage... to 22 damage, and my opponents 26 health are all gone this round!

Here's a look at a match against a Light opponent and you can see we're deep in the match, I'm holed up behind my defenses and we're both at full health (I'm just one point down!) That pesky Scholar of Power has just hit the board and next round I take my opponent from 30 to 0 with those two Runes of Fire in my hand.

There are absolutely other winning scenarios that don't involve this perfect storm... but it's sooo fun to have those 20+ spell boost games! 😄

This deck so far has about a 65% win rate which isn't fantastic, but it is holding me right on the border of Ethereal Diamond and Mythic ranks so it's against some pretty stiff competition. I've started playing around with a couple card substitutions to try and improve on it and refine the deck. If you're interested in checking it out here's a link to the iteration from this post to play around with yourself!

I'm loving the new Deck Code feature which allows for easily copying and replicating decks (at least to the best of your collection's ability!) of your opponents.

Hell, between the airdropped tokens, some lucky pack openings, and the Forge being re-enabled... I'm just loving everything about Gods Unchained right now.

If you haven't checked out Gods Unchained yet I highly recommend it, especially if you have a history with games like Magic: the Gathering or Hearthstone and have enjoyed them in the past. There's already a great community on Hive which is currently being supported by a great contest through the end of the year as well... so get battling!

Non players, feel free to ask any questions in the comments. Fellow GU enthusiasts, let me know what levels you're at or link me the decks you’re the most proud of creating!

I'll see you in my next post... or in the Arena!

Whoa! I wish I had discovered this game sooner. I started playing few weeks back and I'm currently in rank 36, it will probably take months to get to rank 100, lol. Gods unchained is revolutionary and only regret is I didn't get onboard sooner. Enjoy!

If GU achieves widespread success (which I hope & think it will) then even those just signing up now will be among the first players. It's still very early. Good luck ranking up and may all your pack openings be legendary!

Yeah. Thanks

Hey @bryan-imhoff,
Do you mind supporting the HiveBuzz proposal for 2022 so our team can continue its work next year?
That would be much appreciated! Your feedback, if any, is welcome of course. Thanks.
