Hey, I'm meltysquid aka iceysquid#1529 on Discord, aka squidsquidsquidsquid on Twitch. I am a Mythic Gods Unchained player and Hive content creator. It has been a long journey in Gods Unchained starting out as F2P.
Starting Out
I found Gods Unchained in March this year through the Stay Play Get Paid promotion on a Youtube video. I've enjoyed card games and have played multiple ones before like YuGiOh, Magic the Gathering, Pokemon TCG Online, Hearthstone, Shadowverse, and Legends of Runeterra, so getting into another one and getting some money sounded nice. I downloaded the game, setup my metamask wallet, and started playing. It was pretty easy at the start since GU is similar to Hearthstone so I knew the basics already. I climbed the ranks quickly reaching Mythic in 2 weeks with a Welcome and Core Nature deck.
The Grind
Nature Struggle
When I started, the weekend ranked rewards were Trial of the Gods but the rewards were frozen until IMX was set up because of the high gas fees. The remaining TOTG rewards were distributed in May but I was in the unlucky bunch who had their rewards missing until they resolved it in July. So I was stuck with Welcome and Core cards for most of the summer. Keeping in mythic was hard as a F2P player, there are so many powerful Genesis and TOTG cards that your deck struggles to beat Pyramid Warden, Demogorgon, Neferu, Selena. Ramp Magic was also running rampant in high levels, Astric Implosion wiped out your board and your hopes of winning time and time again. I did decent during this time, mostly hoping not to face Ramp Magic or Soul Burn Death.
Weekend in Arms
TOTG was locked in March and the meta has gotten stale. The devs have made some (questionable) attempts at shaking up the meta before the next expansion Divine Order came out. The first of these was in May and what I remember as everyone gets protected. Call to Arms was changed from an unplayed health buff to "Give protected to each creature in your deck. Draw a Card." Every single player was running C2As if they knew what they were doing. The players rioted after 1 weekend and the card was hotfixed to the version you see today. For me, it was nice not getting slammed by Astric every game but the game devolved into who drew C2A first.
Enduring Hell
The second of these meta shakeups was when they nerfed Magic, finally, and changed Enduring Shield. At the time, Onslaught god power, which gives one of your creatures blitz, was a pain in the player base (See this great song by cautionfun about Onslaught
They had this version of Enduring Shield which gave their god protected after attacking or being attacked, which protected their face a lot then they would wipe your board with Carnage Sweep. They changed it to this, 2/2 relic with Blitz and when you attack one of your creatures get protected. The meta shifted to 50% War, games were decided by who drew Enduring Shield first, decks ran 2x Iron-Tooth Goblin to destroy turn 1 shields. The top decks were Onslaught or if you were budget Enrage War. I miss the old enrage being able to buff your small creatures to trade up or burn your opponent's creatures if you're going second. This lasted for 2 months until the week after Divine Order came out and they nerfed Enduring Shield with a bunch of overpowered War cards (who thought the original Rolling Thunder was fine, with one glance you knew 56 stats for 6 mana was broken and had to be changed).
I kind of liked the meta as this time since I could get 20/25 wins on the weekends with a budget aggro war deck and score some legendary Divine Order packs.
Play2Earn Pyramid Warden
When Divine Order was released, I was able to sell some of my accumulated weekend reward DO cards early and buy some of the powerful Genesis and TOTG cards I've been getting whopped by. It was a great feeling being the one to play turn 1 Pyramid Warden making the Play2Earn dream come true. The F2P grind was over.
Since then, I've been earning legendary DO packs on the weekend, getting GODS from Blessing of the Gods, and forging core cards. Maybe one day I'll be able to afford Demogorgans.
Community
Gods Unchained
Gods Unchained has one of the best communities around. Everyone is nice and helpful, they're willing to help new players build decks, there is lots of resources made by players for players. Before, I used to rarely watch streams but now I tune in daily for Copperpitch and TSTuesday. Usually, I'm a lurker but Gods Unchained is the first community I am active in. You can find me around on Copperpitch's discord.
NFTs in card games is interesting, it brings some aspects of physical cards into the digital space. Owning your cards, retaining collection value, and being able to do whatever you want with them is great. Although some aspects aren't so great, I'm looking at you Apocalypse Now. Gods Unchained feels like the first good play to earn game. Low barrier to entry, free to try, and good rewards even for new players. WAGMI!
Hive
I started on Hive by making F2P deck guides for Nature and War aimed at new players. At first, I saw wasper posting GU content on Hive and people were asking on discord where to start out and what cards to run, so I saw an opportunity to make guides on Hive. Since then I've written a deck spotlight, meta analysis, and weekend ranked overview. Hive has gotten big in the GU space after acidyo started the GU Hive Contest. It is nice seeing all the new creators on Hive where everyone can write about Gods Unchained and share their experience playing the game.
All in all, it feels great to be part of this community.
Hey man!
Great introduction! I remember the Call to arms meta, that was the worst ,haha. I love the onslaught video by cautionfun, hahaha. I haven't seen that one before.
I'm also a new creator on HIVE and top 50 player in GU. I started playing again after a 5-6 month break (during call to arms meta :). I'm starting out on HIVE too. I'm also planning on using all my earnings on HIVE towards getting the pyramid wardens, and I really want Demogorgons.
Keep up the good work, and let's brainstorm ideas for HIVE and Gods Unchained in the future! :)
Hey nice to meet you. One of the things you can probably do to expand your audience is look for people that are introducing themselves and try to help their strategies or thought process. Often times I find on hive people post and forget. Or a ton of short responses. To me hive is a marathon and not a sprint and it is about building quality connections with individuals to be mutually engaging in each other's content.
