Turbo Coronet Magic

Intro

Turbo Coronet Magic is a fast and consistent combo deck that uses Lost in the Depths (LITD) to find the combo pieces to set up a discounted The Divine Coronet and summon multiple 9-drops.

I wrote about Turbo Coronet when Coronet first came out and it was 4 mana.

Undertow Striker has brought back the deck with a vengeance. For the low, low cost of running no spells except for LITD, you can guarantee drawing LITD from Striker and effectively have 4 LITD in the deck.

The deck has a 70+% chance to find LITD or Striker by the time you want to play it. Assuming you want to play LITD on turn 2 going first or on turn 1 going second.

The hypergeometric distribution probability calculation comes from the following:

  • 30 cards in deck
  • 2 LITD + 2 Striker
  • 3 cards in the initial hand + 3 mulligan shuffles + 2 draws for turn going 1st OR 1 more mulligan shuffle and 1 draw for turn going 2nd
  • 1 LITD needed to combo

God Power

The deck always takes Magebolt. You usually find LITD without needing to foresee or you can spend your mana on foresee creatures. It also has more uses after the combo to ping off stuff or spend more mana and take less fatigue damage.

Clear Mind can help you find LITD, but it isn't needed.

Overcharge has no use in the deck.

The 1-drops are all flexible except for Undertow Striker, which draws LITD. They foresee to help you find LITD or Striker, or help against aggro. Backstreet Bouncer gives you runes, which can be used normally or saved for Avatar of Magic.

I used to run Lightning Talisman in the deck that I copied from someone, but after seeing someone top 10 without a 3-cost card, I reconsidered it would be more consistent since you don't have to rely on finding combo pieces in the mulligan to ensure Coronet on turn 4. Choralis Rune Moth is another 3-drop that some people ran to get runes from.

Giramonte gives you copies of Coronet so you don't go into fatigue and can get multiple 9-drops if they don't clear Giramonte.

Combo

The combo generally follows these steps

  1. Find LITD, either by drawing it naturally or from Striker.
  2. Use LITD on a 1-drop and obliterate most of your deck, leaving only the combo pieces.
  3. On turn 4, use the pip, play both Warp Engineers discounting Coronet to 1 mana.
  4. Play the 1-mana Coronet and it will shuffle itself into the deck
  5. On the following turn, play Giramonte, then the Coronet, and summon a 9-drop.
  6. If you have a pip left (if you went second or found LITD late), play the 1-mana Coronet created by Giramonte, so you can summon a 9-drop next turn.

Mulligan

When going first, aim to play LITD on turn 2 to save the pip for turn 4. Try to keep one combo piece in the mulligan to ensure you always draw Coronet on turn 4.

When going second, you can LITD on turn 1 since you have more pips. Don't keep any combo pieces in the mulligan if you already have Striker/LITD in hand, as you will LITD on turn 1 and always draw Coronet by turn 4. If you kept a combo piece, you will go into fatigue one turn early.

Delving 9-drops

There hasn't been any new 9-drops created since my last post on this deck. So the odds are the same, 17% to see a specific 9-drop.

Generally you want to find a frontlines against aggro to survive. Polyhymnia is difficult to answer for any deck aside from order or bounce. Other frontlines work too but they can be traded with if your opponent played a lot of creatures.

You should look for sticky 9-drops with ward or hidden against control. Most 9-drops attack face to win the game but Avatar of Magic and Eris provide alternative wincons.

Thaeriel's Anvil is a structure, so you will get a 1 mana 1/1 copy of it from Giramonte. It has ward, backline, and can't attack so it's stats don't matter a lot since it summons a Divine Chains, 6 mana 4/7 structure with frontline, at the end of each turn.

Hippacria's Monster, Howling Berserker, and Raiding Kraken are low rolls.

Depending on if you have a spell in hand or can get one from the sanctum, and if you opponent can clear Avatar of Magic, it could be worth it to summon AOM to beam your opponent to death.

Counters

Fast aggro decks can kill you if you miss on a frontline 9-drop or if you don't find LITD fast enough. If Giramonte gets cleared before you have multiple Coronets in the deck, some decks have enough removal to clear your few 9-drops and leave you with nothing. Dearly Departed will take the Coronet away and reset the stats if you get it back. A ramp magic opponent can ramp fast enough to get to 7 mana and play Unbound Flames or Hortuk to clear Giramonte.

Decks with face damage can go directly for your face and will kill you before you can. There are multiple ways to easily answer the 9-drops: transform, order, bounce, flank, and obliterate.

Gameplay

Here's some gameplay of the deck.

0:00 - Aggro War: I find Striker on 2, summon Poly on 5, ez game.

3:40 - Rockdrake Death: Kind of a weird game. I don't know what the best plays are. I definitely can't rush them down before 6 mana and they get the Over the Line combo. Eris looks good to hopefully mill the combo cards, but she gets slept before she can do anything. Maybe I could have managed the opponent's health better, but they probably have a way to set up their combo anyway.

16:07 - Turbo Coronet Magic: I go first in the mirror. We both combo off. They go for Remnis and the game gets funny. They throw by attacking with Remnis giving me lethal.

24:52 - Aggro War: I go first, LITD on 2, summon Echophon on 5. Another ez game.

29:35 - Relic War: I find LITD late, miss on frontline, and die to the relic.

I love this technical analysis, I have learned a lot. I have this bookmarked and will check this back again if I ever get a Turbo Coronet Magic.

Hi, I like how "Giramonte" can make many copies of "The Divine Coronet", nice games.👍👍👍
