F2P Death Mythic Weekend Ranked Legendary Pack Achieved! (17 Wins)

Gauntlet Progress.png

A weekly recap of my Mythic Weekend Ranked experience, attempting to do a Free-To-Play (F2P) Gauntlet with all the Gods to show that they can all compete and get Legendary packs. Previously I’ve done Nature , War, and Magic; this week is my first weekend with Death.

Weekend 13 Mar 11th – 13th

This weekend was a bit scary; not only was it my 13th weekend haha but it was right after the Core Refresh, which made Magic a little overpowered with buffs. They were dominating the weekend in terms of play rate and win rate. BUT! My zombies held their own and for the first time since I started doing this Gauntlet I was able to secure a Legendary Pack on the first try with a new God! I got a nice 17 wins with my Zombies Death deck. Zombies actually got a pretty good buff with the Refresh too but obviously it was overshadowed by Magic. I’ll talk about them later in this section.

Here’s the deck that I used, costing 0.0161 ETH or ~$41.

The cards that got buffed for my deck, and Death in general, are Wicked Fae, Void Banshee, Cursed Hoplite, and Ray of Disintegration.

Wicked Fae - Now a Death card, not only does it provide good value with 3/3 worth of stats for 2-mana, it also provides a useful Roar akin to Death’s Blood Ritual God Power.

Void Banshee - Previously it obliterated a card from the top of your deck, and now it doesn’t, which is great! Just some damage to your God which isn’t a big deal because of leeching zombies to give you an overstated creature.

Cursed Hoplite - What changed about this is card is the creature summoned with its afterlife: it is now a 1/2 with 1 armor instead of a 1/1, which makes it more sticky! Sticky is what we want so we can run the better Blood Ritual God Power and still have a way to trigger frenzy.

Ray of Disintegration - Now it damages both Gods which is a great boon since it can trigger frenzy and also gives you a bit more reach.

There are also some new Core Refresh cards that could be interesting for this deck, but alas I don’t have any of them yet. These are Petulant Firespreader, Tomb Carver, and Fatihbreaker.

Matches

W13 Matches.png

I was actually surprised at how well the zombies held up against Magic; most of the ones I played were the busted Card Draw Magic but some were Control as well. Control is pretty much the only time I would run the Soul Burn God Power instead of Blood Ritual, because sometimes you just need that reach or frenzy when your opponent has a giant frontline in the way. This deck can also deal with Aggro pretty well as long as you can get some zombies on board so you can start leeching back health. I played against quite a few Aggro War and one against a Deception Hidden Rush deck where they went straight for face; I was able to leech back so much health that their hidden cat with Dark Knives was rendered super ineffective.

Mulligan Guide

Since there’s quite a few low mana creatures here there’s a bunch of options that you would be happy with. The most important thing is to try to find a zombie generator in your opening hand. With a sticky minion like Voracious Fiend or Cursed Hoplite out, you can ensure a frenzy for when you drop your Necroscepter or Cursed Obelisk. Blight Bomb is nice for some match-ups so you can get rid of some important targets such as Celestial Stags or All-Seeing Spires, but if you board presence is more important. Of course sometimes you go against Magic that has a Crystal Rain or two in their hand and it just obliterates it but that’s just how it goes haha.

F2P Deck Analysis

This F2P deck actually feels really nice to play with; it has the least amount of RNG from all the others I’ve played so far so there’s less decisions, and with a Necroscepter out you can really control the sanctum.

Deck Pros
-Very little RNG, straight-forward deterministic gameplay
-Good amount of healing from leech, can save you from aggression and War’s Slayer God Power
-Nice value from the low-mana cards, good early board presence to help set up your zombie generators
-Necroscepter is great for controlling the sanctum; note that any zombies not generated due to board space will decrease your opponent’s favor
-Good unconditional removals from Blight Bomb and Ray of Disintegration; if they don’t have ward, it’s byebye! Blight Bombing a protected Oddi feels nice haha
-Decent reach with the deal 2 damage to each God cards with Undead Chimera and Ray of Disintegration, plus the strength boost from Overseer of Vitality

Deck Cons
-Will probably lose, especially to aggro, if you don’t draw your zombie generators
-Limited large removals; if your opponent has a big frontline, you really hope you draw your Ray of Disintegration if all you have on board are little zombies
-If you don’t have a Necroscepter out, your zombies are going to feed your opponent a bunch of favor
-You’re going wide a lot of the times since you don’t have too many high health creatures, so you’re susceptible to AOEs; your low health zombies are really good targets for Overkill

There are a limited upgrades/sidegrades to this deck (plus the aforementioned new Core Refresh cards), but unless you switch to a different archetype and try to do an OTK zombie deck, there isn’t too many cards I’d actually change:

image(28).png

Arch of Amenmose 0.0026 ETH ($7) – Really good at generating zombies, but might be a little slow for 6 mana

Anputian Magus 0.0022 ETH ($6) – Interesting option to provide a lot of runes from your zombies dying

That Which Aches 0.066 ETH ($171) – Could be an interesting choice here, providing sticky aggressively stated minions

Going Forward

2 more Gods and I’ll be done the Gauntlet! It’s gonna be tough though, since Deception is a bit weak at the moment with Magic going rampant; their AOE spells destroy Ordered and Hidden creatures. Light has been pretty weak lately but got some decent new Core cards… which I don’t have yet haha. Unless I get a lot of them I will be going with Deception and hoping that Magic gets a bit of a nerf before next weekend.

Last Week's Rewards

W13 Packs!.png

This is my best weekend haul yet!!! My first Gold Legendary, first Diamond (decent card as well), plus a bunch of the new Core cards including the Deception Epic and Legendary! The Legendary looks nice for a hidden rush deck but it might be too expensive currently to be in a budget deck… I really want to use it though! The shiny cards are worth about $100 each, but I’ll hold on to them until they announce the bonus for shiny cards.

Sort:

Hidden rush performs very well against magic if you can keep your creatyres hidden and alive! Nice article!

Thank you! Keeping them alive will be the hard part haha, but I'll definitely give it a try. Might have to buy that new 1-drop with ward if I don't get it by then

That's true. But Magic is only 30-40% of decks these days. And hidden creatures with low health aren't the best against Nature, for example. So compromise is needed. This is what I am trying to do last days - to find this compromise.

Congratulations!

Great analysis.

Amazing packs. With Merrick, Deception shouldn't even called weak. Witherfingers is something very special too.

Thank you! Yea Merrick seems fun it's just that these Hidden creatures with lower health can be swiped off with random Nature spells or Magic AOE; we'll see how it goes next weekend!

Nice packs! Jealous of your gold legendary, I haven't unpacked a shiny legendary so far 🙁 I've been trying out Zombie Death lately too. Wondering why you chose not to include Void Flash - it seems like a natural include given how many Zombies you'll spawn. Maybe that'd be too much removal?

Thanks! Yea I think there were a couple of times where I could've used more removal, but most of the times it's just better to have more bodies on board. Usually I use my Rays of Disintegration on Guild Enforcers or other big frontlines, and if I'm out hopefully I have enough of a board to deal with what's left

Love to see 17 wins with zombies! Great run!

Great breakdown and congrats on the diamond familiar
