Thievery god ability: Worth or not?

Greetings everyone,

Picking the correct and best god ability at a certain match is a skill by itself that every single player must learn. Picking the right ability can affect the whole game make a huge different because unlike your deck, your ability is always there for you so picking the right one is so important.

When it comes to the criteria of choosing the god ability, players should choose based on 2 stuff:

1-First one is seeing what deck is he playing and choosing the best ability that is in sync with it and best fits there. There are some decks that just does not work if the appropriate ability was not chosen. Example: A hidden rush deception deck, can never work without Orfeo's Distraction ability. An aggro war deck can never work without Slayer ability.

2-Second criteria is going to be the matchup. Some abilities work better against certain gods than over and can make the difference. For example in a Nature Zoo Deck against a zombie Deck, flourish might be very good to clear as much as possible and then heal back knowing that your creatures won't take lethal damage.

So in this post, I will address the Thievery deception ability, and try to see when is it better to be used than other situations.

First of all let's see what thievery ability is:

Thievery card.jpg

As we can see, Thievery is about adding a 1 mana random card from your opponent domain to your hand. So let's go through the possibilities of cards from each god to see where it might be better than another.

Against God of Death

Death cards.jpg

As we can see, most death spell cards are either about dealing burn and damage or destroying the opponent creatures with dealing damage to your own god , or about destroying your own creature either to heal or get better or more creatures.

Let's say Hidden Rush deception always requires Orfeo's Distraction so we will talk if its either a Mill or Thievery deck.

In a thievery deck, these cards can help well since you are going to be stealing your opponents creatures, so both type of cards either to destroy and buff your creatures or destroy your opponent's can be helpful.

However, in a Mill deck, the only cards that can really benefit you are the draw cards ones, so most of the other spells help your opponent's hand not to get full. So it is a risky situation.

So I would say against deck, in a Thievery deck this ability is worth however, in a Mill deck it depends on luck so it is a risk to take.

Against God of Deception

Deception cards.jpg

Most deception 1 mana cards, server the purpose of either ordering, sleeping ruining your opponent hands or giving extra damage.

With any type of decks in a mirror matchup, Thievery might be a good choice naturally because all type of spells for deception will help you. Even in Hidden Rush deck, your opponents creature will probably be hidden anyway already.

This now depends on luck and what cards you going to get from your opponent. If they are card that matches the deck you are playing, this can be very good, if not it can be a tough situation. But I would to take a risk because whatever you get it will not be a disaster!

Against God of Light

Light cards.jpg

Against God of Light it is a bit tricky, a couple of 1 mana spells are order related, and the others are all about buffing and healing. In case the deck you are using had order in it as a strategy somehow, it is good to take Thievery in this case against light.

In Thief and Mill decks, it is also good to take it since you are going to be stealing creatures from him you can buff them up or order the enemy to get damage in. However, it is not worth when using Hidden Rush because even though the buff is nice, you won't need it a lot in this case since most of the time your creatures will be hidden thus, not targeted.

I would say that it is also situational here just like god of death case.

Against God of Magic

Magic cards.jpg

I was very surprised when I saw how few are the 1 mana spells for magic. I expected it to have the most spells of this price!

When going up against magic, I would say Thievery is not worth in all cases. Because in Hidden Rush you need the Hidden so that he can't clear your creatures with spells, while in either Mill or Thief decks, you will already be stealing cards from him. And usually most of these cards will be spells because, well it's magic!

In addition, magic is known mostly to play a lot of spells and few creatures so getting a lot of spells from them can be kind of useless. I would say stick with Orfeo's Distraction against magic because I do not feel thievery is worth it in this case.

Against God of Nature

Nature cards.jpg

Nature cards vary from creature summoning, giving regen, dealing damage or getting random nature creature to your hand.

Against this matchup, I would say it is decent to use Thievery in case you are playing Hidden Rush because it can help you make your creatures stronger or even put in more creatures and it can also give you good nature cards that can help. But most of the time it is better to use Orfeo's Distraction.

However, it is insanely good to use Thievery against nature in case you are playing anything else. Because first of all, a lot of nature creatures are strong so you will be mostly getting nice creatures, so these spells can help you so much to control and dominate the game!

Against God of War

War cards.jpg

Frenzied aggro has been there and effective for a while; it is known as one of the fastest decks to finish the game along with Hidden Rush Deception. Frenzied aggro uses several 1 mana spell to help it excel and be better.

It is all about blitzing, getting extra strength and clearing board with small spells so you can dominate it even more. So in this case I would say Thievery when using Hidden Rush against war is very good because it can help you immensely get your creatures stronger and get that damage in to win the race!

It is also good with other decks because all 1 mana spells will be in sync with the war creatures you'll be stealing or will help a lot clear the board!

Conclusion

As we can see, the usage of God abilities can make a whole lot different for any game. It is a skill very necessary to learn and perfect to get more dubs in.

As for Thievery, I would say it is good most of the times outside Hidden Rush Decks, however the situation may vary and it can be better or worst to use in some scenarios. So always try and explore and try to see what spell worked best for you and when and go for it!

This was my humble opinion and that is it for this post, hope it was helpful or informative to anyone and wish everyone an amazing gaming! If you like this post do not forgot to drop a follow I would really love it and take care as always!

Mad Love, Peace out <3

I mainly play with Ludia's Thievery ability and I can say that it's always a delight to play against war decks and the absolute worst against death.

Death god uses cards that deal damage to herself and are useless to steal.
"Out of its misery" FTW!

I do not play deception a lot and I am planning on getting into it slowly. So I thought understanding such stuff is important. And yes I agree with what you said and any tips are welcomed also!

I've been wanting to experiment with Thievery for a while now. But Orfeo's Distraction is too good to pass on. If Thievery had been 1-mana, it might be worth considering.

Great post, by the way.

Agreed paying 2 mana to get 1 mana spell can be a waste most of the times and orfeo's is good in many situations. It is a risk worth taking sometimes and depending on the matchup because it can be worth it sometimes. Thanks for the kind words!
