So have you been here? My first post into this tasty travel community as I take you on a tour down memory lane

in Worldmappin3 years ago (edited)

Well hello there to all of you light travelers around the world, I hope that you're doing well out there and still managing to get that precious traveling time in!

So I live in Melbourne and have been here since 2005, but before that, I was a completely free spirit for many years galavanting around the countryside- both mine and some of yours, with my trusty old duffel bag strapped across my back.

I used a duffel bag- my long 'sausage' bag as I called it, because not only did it fit more things (read clothes- I am a girl after all...🤣..), but it also fit my 2 favourite tennis racquets (which I still have with me today...) And it was less easy to lose 1 large bag than many small bags strapped together...

Anyway, after a stint as a Tennis Coach at #Frenchwoods Festival of Performing arts in Upstate New York in 1997, then a stint on charter yachts in Fort Lauderdale, New Orleans, my friend and I got an 'autodriveway car' and headed up to Colorado.

At some stage along the way, we were told about this amazing place in #Texas where the native Americans believed in was a extraordinary and magical energy ground and we just had to go there on the way past.

This place is called #EnchantedRock and going back through my photos and reading the information on these websites (which weren't too abundant back then either...) I really REALLY REALLY want to go back there again and spend much longer than the day and night that we did back then....[//]:# (!pinmapple 29.682762 lat -96.712280 long A hiking adventure down memory lane and up Enchanted Rock d3scr)

Folklore of the local Native American tribes reverently ascribes mystical and spiritual powers to the rock, hence the name magical or ‘Enchanted Rock’. Because of its unusual geological features and archeological significance, the U.S. Department of the Interior designated Enchanted Rock as a National Natural Landmark in 1971.......So #haveyoubeenthere? If not let me tantalise you with this tasty bit of info here and highly recommend that you click on this link https://www.shiftfrequency.com/enchanted-rock/ to go directly to the website as this is such a wonderfully well articulated and rounded source of information from the personal experiences of the author and unfortunately, after 23yrs, I cannot do the place justice by stumbling through my fading memory (and maybe the acid.🤣..😇..) Plus we only spent the day and night there as we had a deadline to get the car top Colorado and just HAD to stop in Roswell, NM on the way ofcourse..😁

Anyway, it was not quite as much of a 'civilised' hike up there then as it is now by the looks of these 21st century photos on this website here....https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/enchanted-rock

But I was young and full of energy and I remember it being a pretty easy hike and loved the feel of it- being out there in the open, amongst the trees and nature in general and no humans around (not a single soul...) https://www.esi.utexas.edu/files/004-pdf.pdf

I just wish that I had've known more about the history of the place- both in regards to being so many cultural occupations there over so many centuries (and if you want to know more too, then click on this link to read some great historical stories https://www.themossranch.com/about/history-of-enchanted-rock), aswell as the geology and formations of #EnchantedRock itself when I was there https://serc.carleton.edu/integrate/teaching_materials/mineral_resources/student_materials/unit5reading.html

But atleast I'll know way more when I go there again next time!

And I'm sure I've got more photos to share and hopefully I still have the negatives here to scan, but until my new scanner arrives....But either way, although I can't articulate it too well out loud, visually the entire story is still there in my memory.

So Enchanted Rock, until we meet again, you will never be forgotten and I will always be dreaming of you.

Well, thank you all for reading and I hope that you enjoyed my brief trip down memory lane and I really hope that you can get there yourself if you haven't already.
