If he sticks to just making mutually beneficial (and respectful) deals, it might just work.
I get the impression that many African nations are totally fed up with Western countries tying everything to the American view of what idealised democracy and human rights should look like (despite the US's failings on those very topics) when all they really want is to trade on a level playing field.
It's why China and Russia have made such huge inroads into growing trade and assistance with a place that the US and France thought of as their possession. They are demonstrating that there is an alternative to paternalistic indirect colonialism.
