As papaya leaves are bitter, the conversation unfolded as follows:
Friend: Bas (which is the name my son calls me), do you want this gulai? (Gulai is a dish cooked with a special recipe and coconut milk, but this one has papaya leaves in it.)
Me: Sure, I like gulai.
Friend: But there are papaya leaves in the gulai, and they are bitter. Do you still like it?
Me: Yeah, don't just stop at papaya leaves; I have endured the bitterness of life too.
Upon hearing my response, everyone laughed, including myself.
My analogy comparing the bitterness of papaya leaves to the bitterness of life was unexpected and quirky, which made people laugh at my answer. Life's difficulties often come and go for me. Just as I finish dealing with one problem, another hits me. I used to feel depressed when I complained to the environment, the government, or the people around me. However, these negative feelings didn't lead me anywhere. Instead, I started viewing my problems from a different perspective. I chose to make jokes and laugh at my difficult situations rather than complain about them.
That's a better way to respond to life's difficulties—changing your mind and attitude.
