I was extremely eager to check the box office results for this weekend. It is fascinating to observe the performance of movies, particularly in such a slow summer time as this one. I was amazed when “The Garfield Movie” took the number one spot with its $14 million revenue. But on reflection, people still have a soft spot for that lazy lasagna-loving cat. An animated film doing well is nice to see, especially one that brings back some memories.
“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” was another big release I had been waiting for. It ended up in third place raking in an estimated $10.8million. Given how popular the Mad Max franchise is, I thought more of this movie was going to happen. Perhaps it wasn’t received well by audiences or it missed the timing, unlike other parts before it. Nevertheless, I feel that with a strong cast and thrilling storyline, it stands a chance.
Another interesting movie is “IF,” which made approximately $10.8 million as well as “Furiosa.” This film featuring Ryan Reynolds resonated with many people. The idea of imaginary friends coming alive is unique and exciting hence its popularity must have come from there.
Additionally, the fifth place went to “The Fall Guy” and “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.”This later made $8.8 million and a lot of money worldwide. In contrast, “The Fall Guy” got $4.2 million. This shows their continued support by fans.
What is most striking about this year’s box office numbers as compared to those of previous years is the fact that they have behaved. It has seen a significant decline from last year and pre-pandemic levels. For instance, this summer has been dull with no major blockbusters released yet. Last summer had films like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “The Little Mermaid,” which were doing well at around now.
From my perspective, there are some movies I expect to be out in the future days including Inside Out 2 which looks promising and could be an essential shot for cinema revenue. Furthermore, there is a huge potential for this summer to be its hit because other family-oriented movies have already done extremely well so far especially things like Despicable Me 4 besides others such as Deadpool & Wolverine; that would help much.
Generally speaking, this has been an interesting but rather slow movie-summer period so far. So far we’ll see how the rest of the season plays out and who will emerge tops in terms of movies are concerned.
