Wow, for a moment in American politics! I just can't believe Kamala Harris is officially the Democratic presidential nominee. As both the first black and South Asian woman to lead a major party ticket, Harris is already making history. I will confess that I'm pretty elated at the prospect of her becoming our first female president if she can take down Trump in November.
I was a little surprised when Biden stepped aside last month, but it makes sense given concerns about his age. Harris seems to have hit the ground running since then. She's been campaigning hard in the battleground states, and apparently, she is crushing it with fundraising. Raise over $310 million in just July? That is seriously impressive.
Wonder who Harris chooses for her running mate. That announcement should be any day now. Whoever it is, he'll have to be prepared to stare down Trump and Pence. This thing's gonna be a slugfest from end to end.
Some Republicans are now crying foul over the way Harris secured the nomination, labeling it a "coup." I think that is a little too melodramatic. After all, Biden endorsed her, and other potential rivals fell with dispatch into line. That seems to me methodically done, a pretty orderly transition of power.
The virtual roll call process is quite interesting. I guess they had to do it like this due to state ballot access laws. Politics is always so difficult behind the scenes. At least Harris passed without any drama.
I will be watching Harris in action at the Democratic Convention this month in Chicago. Her speech, the one by which she will accept her nomination, is going to be the big moment of speaking and carrying through with safety. I hope she projects a compelling vision for what's ahead for our country. Indeed, we could really use some unity and optimism right about now.
This is going to be a very hard campaign. Trump's a strong competitor, and he won't pull punches. At the same time, however, I feel that Harris can match him blow for blow. Her prosecutor background should serve her well in debates.
It's rather cool Harris is from California, the first Western nominee in Democratic party history. So, I do like the fact that she represents a new generation of leadership. At 59, many years younger than both Biden and Trump.
All things considered, I'm fairly optimistic on Harris's chances. But November is still a long way off in politics. Anything can happen.
