What if I wanted to change my name on HIVE?

Ridiculous name thumb.jpg

We all know that the amazing HIVE ecosystem allows us to truly own our data and our community with human-readable accounts. But were we all thinking about these amazing features when we first joined the blockchain? I know I wasn't. I stumbled upon this place by chance really because I was following musicians that happened to blog here.

So the question I'd like to ask the HIVE community is this:

What if when I joined 4 years ago, I decided to create an account with a ridiculous name like Professor Poopypants or Bacon Double Cheeseburger and I grew this account to reputation of 80, with tons of posts and comments. What if I then decided I want to have a more serious account dedicated to teaching folks about project management concepts and wanted to keep my reputation and history?

What would be the best way?

Has this been discussed before?

I know that you can change your display name, but this doesn't always update on all front ends. As an example, I changed my display name to "Al Rourke".

This change is not reflected on Snaps:

Threads does update your display name:

I'd love to get some discussion going in the comments section.

Edit:

No upvotes for those who come to this post to say that's impossible. The idea is to get some creative thinking going.

An interesting question indeed. I'm sure someone could provide some technical data on it, however, from a !SLOTH perspective. You're name is tied into the block chain as your wallet address so changing it wouldn't be possible. Having some form of display names on different platforms could be an option though. It's probably a rather niche thing to need.

I've seen discussing on people wanting to separate the content they create over different accounts, this normally just leads to them making a new account for different content which is allowed. I guess that's the only way to keep your 'teaching' content separate from you're poopy mcburger face content.

Having some form of display names

Yes, something like this. I know you can't change your handle. Like you said, it's tied to the blockchain, but If there were some way to link accounts you own to your display name as an option.

If your name was "John Smith" but you have a Distriator account, a business account and a burn account you wanted to tie to your display name.

Display Name: John Smith

Associated Accounts:

It's an interesting question that's actually somewhat meaningful on a personal level, because this "alt" account has wandered in purpose over time. What's more, I actually have three alt accounts under the @curatorcat main account, and they disparate content styles.

I keep bumping into the fact that both "Display name" and description are pretty short fields.

I'm increasingly thinking the best option may simply be to embed what you want to highlight in your header image, and direct people by putting your Linktree link in the "website" field if you want to explain further. It's not super elegant and sends people offsite, only to bring them back to different sites.

Which begs the question: Is it time for one of our own developers to build a Linktree-like dApp for Hive, for situations like these... or would there simply not be enough demand?

I know there's no shortage of people who have their usernames with .leo, .pob .cent and various other variations to target Hive-Engine tribal communities.

This is a good question and I believe this could be done if we would implement also Aliases for our accounts. You need to have account uniqueness (that could be the hive username), but for presentation purposes to use an Alias which we can change it anytime. We also can enforce the Alias to be unique as well in order to not overlap and create confusion.

Yes! exactly! Something like account aliases would be super useful. Love this answer.

There is some version of this as you can see from my conversation with @borsengelaber, but the display name (or alias) doesn't update on every front end.

I don’t think that is possible. You would Need to start from scratch with a new account. At least as far as I know

I think there are options to make it possible. I don't want to change my wallet name because it's tied to the blockchain, but I know that display name can be changed. I've changed it to Al Rourke on inleo.io

Ah ok. 👍🏻

Or like if someone called themselves buttcoins as a joke and then wanted to be known as @cryptoeinstein and be taken seriously 😉

lol, somebody already chose that name 🤣

I thought about tagging you, haha. You could always create a new account, like TheyCallMeDan did, but that implies starting over and directing your friends to a new account.

I think it's mostly because it's web3 and it's intricate, interwoven and coded in multiple layers. I think perhaps the chain can have a sort of soft fork that allows people to change their username maybe one time and not more than once. I don't know if such soft fork is possible. I'm not a techie or block expert, I just think even if it's tedious, there can be some form of fine to pay to actually change it, just once and only once.

I'm thinking of something more at the front-end level. Like a display name or an ENS domain which allow you to purchase a name like Josediccus.eth and tie it to a wallet.

Well truthfully I didn't think of that. However, let's say it was possible with peakD I doubt it'll be visible to other frontends like maybe hive.blog. It's something that'll be complicated to do.

Professor Poopypants or Bacon Double Cheeseburger

I can see how someone may dislike their name. But I am happy about my name. Originally I chose Fieryfootprints as my name because I wanted to leave a mark(footprint) in this world and was using pyrography(wood burning). Even thought I have not made pyrography art piece in a while but I still call my let's plays Fiery plays. At this point that name is part of my identity. Also I may still return to pyrography at some point in the future...

Yes, thank you. Do you have any suggestions as to how this might be possible? I'm looking for creative ways to solve this problem.

From what I know changing name on Hive is not possible. But then again even after all those years I am hardly an expert about many Hive related things. If I don't know something normally I ask @galenkp or @tarazkp. They know about Hive far more than I do.

It is not posible. Right now but it would be very great.

Thanks for your comment.

I don’t know much but with the little I know, I think it is not possible. If it is, I know so many people would have changed their usernames
I wish to change mine too

Thanks for your comment.

I am on the queue to learn from what the masters will contribute here 😂

We'll see. Already some interesting replies in the comments section.

It can't be. I also tried to change

#hive #posh

You didn't read my post.

@alex-rourke, I paid out 11.573 HIVE and 0.000 HBD to reward 12 comments in this discussion thread.

I was hoping for more engagement, but oh well. I still got some good comments.

i think it is not possible, since it's on blockchain i guess there are technical issues obscure to me ...you can change your display name at least

the only thing is to redirect people to a new account, not much else you can do

Yeah, I've read some interesting thoughts in the comments. Thanks for commenting.
