In theory yes, but in practice I think that would put White Knight in a legal crosshairs. Right now he had no personal benefit from what he did. He simply prevented a theft being rewarded. But what we call "returning stolen goods" could be cast as theft and left to courts to sort out. The lack of a profit motive would be important in that situation, so best to leave it out.
