RE: Ask the Hive: is your country past the peak of the coronavirus pandemic yet?

The epidemic seems very much past the peak in Finland. The basic reproductive number is estimated to be between 0.4 and 0.75, which means that for every one case that many people contract the virus. Primary and middle schools were opened on May 14. Pubs and restaurants have been open since June 1. Other restrictions have been gradually lifted in June. Swedes and Russians are not allowed into the country. Other Nordics and Estonians are allowed to come.

The national strategy is now to isolate all new cases and trace all contact chains right from the start to suppress the epidemic.

Thanks for this valuable feedback, I know Finland has been handling this thing very well. Much better than your Swedish neighbors for example... Looks like you guys are really out of the woods. Good job :)

Sweden gambled and lost. Sweden's chief epidemiologist Anders Tegnell believed it would be possible to attain herd immunity. In May, studies in the worst afflicted region of Stockholm showed that only 7% of the population had had antibodies. The number of those who were asymptomatic or had had only mild symptoms was quite low. What that means is that the disease is quite severe but the good news are that one does not contract it very easily. Thus it should be more easily suppressed than previously thought.

Finland, Norway, Iceland and Denmark followed a similar strategy.

Yes, I know. I think the rest of Europe was watching the Swedish experiment closely (and then, they were glad they didn´t take the same approach).

1 of the measures of our new normal is the mandatory use of face masks in shops and public transport.
Last year we didn't wear masks.

  • What's different this year?
  • How many people ask questions?

Our leaders imposed measures that reduce our liberties so they have the responsibility to offer us the proof for their measures. Without proof 1 theory is just 1 speculation.

What's the proof?
