Waterfall Sludge Surprise

in The Man Cavelast year

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to comment on how weird it is to see something like this when you are not expecting it!

Waterfall Sludge Surprise

Waterfalls and bodies of water, they are all wonderful, right? Well for the most part yes! However this time it was not the case lol.

The little man and I were trying to change up our fishing locale one day and we decided to go to another part of one of our favorite lakes. We parked the car and walked over to check out to see where we could throw a few casts, only for us to experience this horror! Damn this shit was nasty! As you can see, this is on par for some weird looking mixture of coffee with whipped cream or some shit lol. It sounds like it would be wonderful, but in this context, hell fucking no! This shit is nasty lol

What's annoying about it is that it's because of the massive quantities of rain that we've been getting in the area for really the whole summer up to this point. We have a day or two of nice sunny weather and then we get rain for a day or two, then have more. It's pretty wild and I am wondering if this year is some type of La Nina or something, where the oceans are warmer and creating a lot more rainfall in areas like where we live. This is a good explanation in my uneducated-on-the-topic opinion but I'm not at all worried about the fearporn in the news "climate change". Not to digress on that topic..

The culprit here is sadly the people who live in the area, they all enjoy doing all kinds of fertilization to their lawns.. gardens too, to be fair. Combine that with the thousands of houses around, and all of the rain that comes down not only washes the lawn of the person that lives on the lake or the stream that feeds into the lake, but all of the people around them. It becomes sadly a giant cesspool of runoff water filled with the junk that's in there lol it's gross! That generates these giant and nasty formations of foam and god knows what else under the bubbles.

This also has some pretty annoying and significant consequences for the local wildlife! This area here is completely devoid of the fish wildlife that usually is quite thriving in this spot. When this crap isn't here, this spot is an excellent one to catch a sunfish, perch or bass because the bridge has quite a flow of water underneath it and it gives for some good hiding grounds for the bigger fish waiting to see the small fish coming through the tunnel. We've caught a number of good sized sunfish out of the tunnel and that's what my son was after. He's really good about catching a bunch of bluegill and I don't mind it at all, as it is good entertainment for him lol.

The nasty foam coverage shit though, blocks the sunlight and strangles the oxygen in the spot! We tried catching a fish further out last year and managed to get one but when we released it back into the water here, the thing got stuck in the weeds! The weeds on this section here are quite insane, and this nasty cloud of foam shit is a testament to how out of hand things can get in the right conditions. Sadly the conditions this year, while great for filling up the reservoirs and lakes with water, are also a breeding ground for gross bacteria like this lol. I wonder if a show like Jackass would, in the past, take a scoop of this shit and drink it hahaha. I don't know if I would be able to stomach that one!

That is definitely a nasty surprise! I can't imagine how disappointed you must have been to find that the spot you were planning to fish was covered in foam.

It's really unfortunate that the runoff from people's lawns is having such a negative impact on the local wildlife. It's important to be aware of the chemicals we use on our lawns and how they can affect the environment.

I'm glad you were able to catch some fish in other spots, though! And I'm sure your son had a great time fishing with you.

I'm not sure if Jackass would have taken a scoop of that foam and drank it, but I'm sure it would have been a pretty gross stunt!

Hahah ya it was some nasty stuff. The sad thing is that it’s in most rivers in the area, all of the rain just washes the stuff off and into the waters, plus the stuff from the roads. I’m glad that I don’t drink the water from it lol. Some people do but I’m sure they filter the heck out of it.
