For the month of September I intend to do more studies of birds but this time with my characters incorporated alongside the birds. Here’s the first, Judith! The bird here is called a Guinea Turaco, they are native to sub- Saharan Africa and from what I’ve learnt they are the only birds that have a true red and green color! One more cool fact is that these birds are monogamous in nature, the male Turaco feeds the female Turaco during courtship and overtime they build their nest together! It’s pretty sweet isn’t it?
Process!
Materials: Reeves Gouache paint, Sinoart sketchbook, Winsor & Newton brushes
I sketched the Jkai girl before proceeding to draw the Turaco
I was super enthusiastic about painting the bird so I finished it up first before moving on to paint the girl. While painting the bird, I made sure to test each shade of green before applying it on the paper. In as much as gouache might be forgiving sometimes, it isn’t all the time.
I painted in my first layer of gouache paint. This time I didn’t want it to be as thick as the other paintings so I added a little More water to the mixture. I’m hoping with practice, my wash layers would be a bit neater.
I popped in a green eyeshadow and proceeded to separate the light and dark areas of the face.
The hair was super fun to paint! Although next time, I’ll need to make sure I clean off my pencil lines before proceeding to paint.
Close ups on the bird!
Thank You for Viewing!

Ohh... I love the shades of green you used in the eyeshadow and the hair. They look so lively <3
Thank you! Adding a bit of yellow to green gives the color more life ;)
It's really fun playing with colors, isn't it? :)
Yes it is!
