Zephyrus, also known as Zephyr, is the god of the west wind and one of the four wind gods who were each associated with a cardinal direction. As the west wind, Zephyrus was considered the gentlest and most nurturing of the wind gods, bringing warmth and fertility to the earth. Apollo, on the other hand, is a major Olympian god with numerous roles and attributes. He is the god of music, prophecy, healing, and sunlight, among other things.
The relationship between Zephyrus and Apollo mainly revolves around Hyacinthus, a beautiful mortal youth whom both gods admired. Hyacinthus was a Spartan prince, and his beauty attracted the attention of several gods, including Apollo and Zephyrus. Apollo and Hyacinthus became close, and they would often spend time together, engaging in sports and other activities. One day, while they were throwing the discus, Apollo threw it far, and Hyacinthus tried to catch it to impress the god. However, as the discus struck him, he was mortally wounded. According to some versions of the myth, Zephyrus, jealous of Apollo's relationship with Hyacinthus, caused the discus to veer off course and strike the young prince. In his grief, Apollo transformed the fallen youth into a flower, the hyacinth.
In our tale, Zephyrus, overwhelmed by guilt, recognized the consequences of his actions. Once friends turned adversaries, the two gods realized that their love for Hyacinthus should have been a bridge, not a chasm. United in their grief, they swore never to let jealousy harm another soul.
