Drawing and Poetry | "Shadow" - Second Drawing In My "Saudade" Series of Poetry Art

in Sketchbook6 months ago (edited)

My previous post was five days ago, and amid my daily routine as a parent and artist, finding time to share and engage with this community has been challenging. I deeply appreciate everyone who commented on my last post, and I sincerely apologize for the delayed response 🙏

This is the second drawing in my new series of poetry art, "Saudade." If you missed the first drawing, you can find it here: Drawing and Poetry | "Letting Go" - My New Series of Poetry Art.

As mentioned in my previous post, the "Saudade" series will consist of eight drawings and accompanying poems. I may include an additional piece to make the series more coherent and interconnected. I have completed all eight poems and seven sketches, and I look forward to sharing each one in my upcoming posts.

🎨 The Drawing 🎨

The first piece in my poetry art series, titled "Letting Go," depicts the story of an old man and the orphan he raised. The second piece continues this narrative, shifting the focus to the orphan, who has grown into a mysterious figure.

This poetry art, titled "Shadow," reflects the poem's theme of an enigmatic and mysterious figure. I wanted to portray this through a silhouette of a person walking alone on a crowded city street at night. The figure is depicted as a shadowy outline against a backdrop of neon lights, with the city's hustle and bustle subtly hinted at in the background. The use of shadows and contrasting light conveys the sense of solitude and mystery described in the poem while capturing the atmospheric setting of urban nightlife.

I initially used water-soluble graphite pencils for this drawing but later incorporated black acrylic paint to achieve deeper contrast. The drawing is slightly smaller than A3 size. I used a cold press watercolor paper because I love the paper's texture.

I used Faber-Castell water-soluble graphite pencils, which come in five different grades: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, and 8B.

Here are the progress photos:

The graphite alone didn't achieve the desired darkness, so I enhanced the contrast with black acrylic paint.

📝 The Poem - "Shadow" 📝

You are a solitary shadow,
a figure drifting through
the bustling streets,
neon lights promising good times,
yet casting only fleeting glows
on the mystery cloaked in black.

Like a silent ghost at society's edge,
you observe the world with detachment,
bordering on indifference.
No one knows your past,
your family,
or where you came from.

Unkempt, a casual chaos
subsisting on lollipops and solitude,
you never care
about faux pas
or opinions.

Perhaps it was a disguise,
a deliberate contradiction to confound
those who dared to decipher you.
Your nonchalant ways,
your casual disregard for societal norms—
it was all part of the facade
you wore so effortlessly.

But despite your distance,
there was warmth in your eyes,
a flicker of something real
within the smoke and mirrors.
I can't help but wonder—
what demons lurked in your past,
driving you to seek comfort
in the madness of the streets?

I was drawn to you
like a moth to a flame,
captivated by your darkness
that swirled like murky water
deep, deep
in my head.

How amazing parent you are to have such a great skill. Fighting for your love in art and a responsible parent.😊

Thank you for your kind words. Yes, I've to juggle my daily responsibilities as a parent and pursue art whenever I can, thus leaving me with little time to engage with wonderful HIVE communities 😅

Don't worry. the Hive people always wait for you.😊 Like me.😁 This is the good thing here in the platform. 😊

Very stunning piece of work, it looks really good. I'm sure it took a while to draw, well done 👍🏾.
